Industry Summary

Childcare will involve you caring for or supervising a child, or multiple children, between the ages of six weeks to thirteen years old. The childcare industry can be broken into a number of different areas based on the age of the children due to their different needs; early years (pre-school), children (school age), young people (teenagers) or families.

From teaching, learning management, nursery care or nannying, there is a huge variation of opportunities for you if you’re passionate about caring for children. Don’t think small (even though they might be!) when you consider the childcare industry! It’s not just about working in a nursery or school; you could be a child care worker or even a carer working alongside a family in their home.

The most common qualification in childcare to look out for are CACHE (Council for Awards in Care, Health and Education) qualifications, which range from entry level to level 5 opportunities (for experienced professionals). CACHE qualifications are well known and widely respected throughout the childcare industry.

The industry is very rewarding, and you’ll be able to see the difference that you’re making every day. You’re going to play a massive role in the development of the children that you work with, and you could even get to see how they progress and advance as they grow up! What options can I take for a career in childcare?

 

Work Experience

Work experience in a career like childcare will give you the opportunity to find out about what the job is all about, and more importantly, whether you could work with children every day! A large number of childcare centres, nurseries and schools will give most people work experience opportunities; however, some organisations will need you to have certain qualifications or safety checks before you work with them. The great thing is any kind of work experience with children will put you in a good position to start applying for roles. From babysitting for a friend or family to volunteering with children, this clear motivation will make you stand out to employers.

Apprenticeships

Childcare is an industry where qualifications are required to get you on the ladder, but hands on experience is also incredibly important. That’s why an apprenticeship in childcare could be the best option for you. You’ll be working from the day you start with experienced colleagues and spending 20% of your time working towards a qualification, all while earning a salary! Here are some of the apprenticeship options that are available.

  • Level 2 – Children and Young People's Workforce
  • Level 3 – Teaching Assistant
  • Level 4 – Children, Young People and Families Practitioner
  • Level 5 – Children, Young People and Families Manager

Degree Apprenticeship

There are opportunities for you to do a degree apprenticeship in childcare, for instance, you could opt to do a Social Work degree apprenticeship. As a degree apprentice, you’ll be gaining valuable experience from your first day as you’ll work full time in social work. And, you’ll be gaining more responsibility every day through your job whist you study towards a degree – completely debt free. As the degree is part of an apprenticeship, you’ll be applying the theoretical knowledge into your job, taking on special projects and making sure that you’ve learnt is developed in the workplace!

University

You could also start your childcare career by studying at university. This is a great opportunity if you’d like to learn all of the theoretical knowledge behind the sector which you can apply to your job when you graduate. You’ll be able to choose what degree to study for and different units each term so you can specialise in whatever interests you the most. Here are some examples of degrees:

Graduate Jobs

Graduates with a degree in a childcare related field tend to enter employment in a variety of sectors within the industry and with a range of employers, including charities, local authorities, schools and health authorities. Some employers may provide further training through a graduate schemes or programme if you wish to join their organisation in order to ensure that you have the skills necessary to succeed in the industry.

Other routes

Although you will need qualifications as your childcare career progresses, you may be able to go straight into a job in some roles. You’ll be learning straight away, and it is an industry which rewards its employees, so progression is certainly an option for you. Nonetheless, it’s important to remember that you may need to undergo go certain training and safety checks before undertaking some jobs, so it’s important to keep this in consideration.

Managers and proprietors in this group plan, organise, direct and co-ordinate the resources necessary in the provision and running of residential and day care establishments and domiciliary care services for persons who require specialised care and/or supervision.

Qualification

Although there are no pre-set academic entry requirements there are a variety of entry routes. However, entrants must be registered with the relevant statutory body and hold the appropriate qualification for the job they do. Off- and on-the-job training is provided and a range of qualifications is available including NVQs/SVQs in Health and Social Care at Levels 3 and 4. Background checks including a CRB check are required.

Job Tasks

determines staffing, financial, material and other short- and long-term requirements; plans work schedules, assigns tasks and delegates responsibilities to staff; arranges for payment of bills, keeps accounts and adheres to health, safety and other statutory requirements; maintains contact between service users and the local community and/or family and friends; assesses service users’ needs and ensures they have access to health and social care services as required; creates a friendly, secure atmosphere to gain the trust and confidence of those using the service; ensures that the physical comfort and all material needs of service users are provided and attempts to resolve problems that may arise.

Work Description

Nursery nurses and assistants care for children from birth up to seven years of age in day or residential nurseries, children’s homes, maternity units and similar establishments.

Qualification

Entry is most common with GCSEs/S grades followed by the award of a certificate from the Council for Awards in Children’s Care and Education. An NVQ/SVQ in Child Care and Education or equivalent qualification at level 3 is required to work as a nursery nurse. CRB clearance is mandatory.

Job Tasks

baths, dresses, prepares feed for and feeds babies, changes babies clothing whenever necessary; supervises young children at mealtimes; plans and organises games and other activities and supervises children’s play; reads stories, organises counting games to help develop language and number skills; writes reports on children’s development and maintains awareness of health and safety issues; communicates with parents and colleagues on children’s development and well-being.

Work Description

Childminders and related occupations provide day-to-day care of children within a domestic setting, and supervise and participate in their play, educational and other activities.

Qualification

Entry may not depend upon academic qualifications, although employers may expect a candidate to possess a qualification accredited by the Council for Awards in Children’s Care or other qualifications. Childminders must be registered with OFSTED to care for children under the age of 8 years. NVQs/SVQs in Child Care and Education are available at Levels 2 and 3. A minimum age limit of 18 years applies, and CRB clearance is mandatory.

Job Tasks

assists children to wash and dress; changes babies’ nappies and clothes as necessary and makes up bottles for feeds; plans, prepares and serves children’s meals and supervises children during meals; mends, washes and irons children’s clothes and tidies their rooms; provides, supervises and participates in children’s indoor and outdoor play activities to promote their development; takes children to participate in play groups or on appropriate outings; takes older children to and from school; maintains appropriate records of children’s development; complies with regulations set by OFSTED and their inspection requirements.

Playworkers deliver and facilitate play opportunities for children in a range of formal and informal settings including play groups, play schemes, free play locations, and in pre- and after-school activities.

supervises children’s games and encourages the development of physical, social and language skills; provides play areas and prepares materials for a wide range of children’s activities; encourages children’s independence, self-confidence and social interaction; organises and supervises children on excursions; organises and supervises children’s activities in accordance with Health and Safety regulations, deals accordingly with injuries and emergencies; puts away equipment and cleans premises after use; liaises with parents, carers and colleagues and keeps appropriate records.

Work Description

Care workers and home carers attend to the personal needs and comforts of the elderly and the infirm with care and support needs (‘service users’) within residential care establishments, day care establishments or in their own homes.

Qualification

There are no formal academic entry requirements. In most cases workers will be required to register with the appropriate statutory body which involves satisfying the registration criteria. This would normally include holding or working towards the appropriate qualification for the job. Entrants must typically be 18 years old and have experience of working in a care environment. Both off- and on-the-job training is available. A wide range of qualifications including NVQs/SVQs covering various aspects of care are available. Background checks including a CRB check are likely to be required.

Job Tasks

assists and enables service users to dress, undress, wash, use the toilet and bathe; serves meals to service users at table or in bed, and assists with feeding if required; generally assists with service users’ overall comfort and well being; provides interest and activities to stimulate and engage the service user; helps with daily activities such as letter writing, paying bills, collecting benefits; undertakes light cleaning and domestic duties including meal preparation as required; monitors service users’ conditions by taking temperature, pulse, respiration and weight, and contributes to record keeping; liaises with professional staff in carrying out care plans etc.
