My interests outside of work are art, the gym, swimming, and lots and lots of reading.
I decided to do an apprenticeship because I believed it would be the best way to start my career as an engineer. This is because my apprenticeship not only allows me to gain new knowledge but also to apply it to real-world situations at work. The company I work for also provides me with ample opportunities to challenge myself and become the best I can be in my engineering career, enabling me to learn and grow as much as I want.
My daily tasks vary depending on the work required. Some days, I focus on improving my skills in CAD or laminating, while on other days, I work with the manufacturing engineers, learning what it takes to become one and understanding their role. Occasionally, I work with robots, learning how to write and run code, and sometimes even fixing them.
Two key highlights of my apprenticeship so far include completing my apprenticeship project and contributing to a new process being implemented at the site. My project allowed me to find a solution to a process problem, which helped both the company and employees by making the new process safer and more cost-effective. I was also proud to be placed in a role to help implement a potential new process, where I worked closely with the manufacturing engineers and led on producing the engineering notes. This experience gave me invaluable insight into the work I would be doing once I become a manufacturing engineer.
The biggest challenge I’ve faced so far has been my project. Balancing all the different factors and ensuring the process worked as planned was difficult, but seeing my ideas come to life and benefit both the business and workers made it worth it. Throughout my apprenticeship, I’ve had an amazing support system, including my managers, manufacturing engineers, and colleagues, who are always willing to help when needed.
After discussing my career with my manager, I hope to eventually become a manufacturing engineer or at least an engineer in training. I also plan to attend university to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. My advice to anyone considering an apprenticeship would be to go for it. Apprenticeships provide hands-on training alongside education, but I would recommend doing thorough research beforehand to ensure you choose the right course and company for you.
