I first considered the apprenticeship route as a way to develop my skills not only as an engineer but also as an individual, particularly in building confidence and improving communication.
Day to day, I work on SFD Mk2s, where I’m responsible for testing, fault-finding, and repairing them to ensure they are ready to be reinstalled in aircraft. One of the biggest highlights of my career so far has been independently completing a series of SFD Mk2 units from start to finish without any assistance—a milestone that really boosted my confidence and showcased how far I’ve come. I’m fortunate to have a supportive repairs and HR team who are always there to help whenever I need it. My advice to future apprentices would be to stick with it; apprenticeships can be challenging, but persistence pays off. If you find that a particular path isn’t right for you, don’t be afraid to speak up and explore other opportunities—there’s always a route that will suit you better.
