Hello, I Am Lewis
By completing an apprenticeship, you’ll become a key part of your company and gain loads of experience that you couldn’t at uni alone.
Tell us more about your experience
My day-to-day role changes often as I have the opportunity to rotate around the different business areas and teams in BT. This is a great opportunity to gain a broad range of experience and find out which projects and parts of the company I enjoy working in. One of the more exciting projects I’ve been involved in was my role in BT’s work with the Scottish Premier League. I supported the newly promoted teams to make sure that all broadcasting capabilities from their stadiums were in place.
One of my proudest moments while being in my apprenticeship, was when I was given the opportunity to coordinate the apprentices within the company and help support them on their journey. I had already been in their shoes! I’ve also picked up loads of key skills – the main one being enhanced confidence to apply myself in different situations. At first, I really dreaded speaking in front of people, but through different scenarios, I’ve developed so much more confidence in my work!
“If you’re also considering an apprenticeship, just go for it!”
I chose the apprenticeship route because I’d personally never really wanted to attend university and felt that an apprenticeship would allow me to gain industry experience while furthering my education. If you’re also considering an apprenticeship, just go for it! There are so many roles out there that have an apprenticeship attached. By completing an apprenticeship, you’ll become a key part of your company and gain loads of experience that you couldn’t at uni alone.
Before applying to my apprenticeship, I really feared entering into a big company as I knew that my confidence would be challenged. At the time, I was really in doubt of what I might be able to bring to the business. Yet, after joining, I realised that expressing myself was easy. The apprentice community is so supportive and helpful, and everyone really wanted to make sure that you’re comfortable in your role.
“The apprentice community is so supportive and helpful!”
When approaching my training provider, they’re always so useful and encouraging, with information or answers to any questions I have about assignments or studying in general. Likewise, at BT I’ve received support across all fronts. Whether that’s in one-to-ones, being given training documents on specific tasks, or just general well-being calls.
At the end of my apprenticeship, I see myself pursuing a level of management. My main purpose in doing this is so that I can develop myself further and understand the ways in which the business operates. From my apprenticeship, I have found that sometimes you don’t always know what job you want to do until you’ve experienced it. So, don’t be hesitant to apply if the role doesn’t appear to be the perfect match on paper – you might enjoy it!
