Job Overview
The successful candidate will work for Places for London, a dedicated commercial property company established by TfL to manage its commercial estate and property development. The company plays a key role in shaping London.
TfL owns a 5,700-acre estate that includes land and properties, with significant potential for creating homes and jobs for the Capital. Its landholdings play a vital role in meeting the Mayor’s priorities for building affordable homes and generating thriving mixed-use places, while also generating revenue to reinvest in improving the transport network. Places for London is committed to creating a fairer, greener, healthier, and more prosperous city.

The candidate will join the Planning and Design (P&D) team, whose role is to provide strategic and development management planning advice to teams working across Places for London, engage with boroughs to secure appropriate planning policies and site allocations, lead the planning process to secure permissions for schemes, liaise with stakeholders on planning matters, and take the lead on design, quality, and sustainability within Places for London.

Sustainability
Sustainability is intrinsic to TfL’s work ethos, ensuring that operations protect and regenerate the natural world.
The successful candidate will assist in implementing the Sustainable Development Framework (SDF) and the Mayor’s ‘good growth’ agenda on projects.

Responsibilities
The Planning and Development Assistant in the Property Development P&D team will help realise Mayoral objectives to deliver new homes, affordable housing, high-quality placemaking, and income generation through the development of TfL properties across the commercial estate.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting planning research and appraising potential development sites and opportunities.
  • Reviewing planning policies and providing advice to colleagues.
  • Supporting the progression of development schemes.

While based in the P&D team, the position offers opportunities to gain experience in other areas of property development. The candidate will work closely with TfL teams, the GLA, local authorities, developers, consultants, and other stakeholders, contributing to exciting and innovative projects that enhance understanding of planning and development processes.

The placement is designed to equip the candidate with a range of skills and experiences to supplement their degree studies and launch their professional career.

"The best thing was the ability to gain on-the-job experience and a degree at the same time. I had the option of going to university, however this opportunity was a no-brainer. Avoiding the fees and getting a degree – who would turn that down?"
