Job Overview
TfL's engineers focus on the assets that form the foundation of the transport system, working on multiple mechanised rolling stock. This includes diesel and battery locomotives that support the critical work taking place across the network. Apprentices on this scheme will be trained in engineering principles, covering both mechanical and electrical disciplines.
Sustainability is intrinsic to TfL’s work ethos, and the organisation ensures that it operates in a sustainable way to protect and regenerate the natural world.
What Will You Be Doing?
As an apprentice, the three-year development programme will consist of placement rotations and training, equipping individuals with a range of skills and experiences needed for a successful career. TfL recognises that every apprentice’s career path is unique, and the programme is designed to offer tailored opportunities.
Year 1
The first year focuses on settling into London Underground. Apprentices will spend the first three months at TfL’s partner college in Enfield, learning fundamental engineering principles. Following this, they will receive all necessary safety training and licensing required to work safely.
Once all safety training has been completed, apprentices will begin shadowing experienced maintainers at Ruislip Transplant Depot, rotating across teams. This period is also when apprentices start gathering knowledge for their qualifications, returning to college periodically for key engineering principle units. The qualifications will be achieved through a combination of knowledge assessments and evidence-based work submissions.
Year 2
During the second year, apprentices will gain hands-on experience in the business, learning from experienced train maintainers, primarily at Ruislip, working on engineering vehicles. However, there will also be opportunities for short placements at passenger train depots across the network and at the Railway Engineering Workshop.
At this stage, apprentices will be expected to follow teams, progressively building confidence and practical knowledge. Alongside this, continued college block release will focus on knowledge development and competency building, marking a critical time for apprentices to submit a large portion of their qualifications.
Year 3
In the final year, apprentices will use their engineering fundamentals and practical experience to continue rotating across placements while completing their qualifications. At the end of the programme, they will present their best work to an external engineering institute for final sign-off, confirming their competency as a rolling stock engineer.
Where Can This Career Take You?
Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship scheme, apprentices could transition into a Train Maintainer position, with further career development opportunities available, including roles such as Advanced Train Maintainer or Team Leader.
At the end of the apprenticeship, individuals will be at an Engineering Technician professional standard. While this is not a requirement, it can be built upon to work towards Chartership status in the future.
Training & Support
Apprentices will work towards a Level 3 qualification in Railway Engineering Technician (Rolling Stock).
Attendance at Conel College on block release will be required, with periods ranging from five weeks to three months.
Technical development will be supported through a wide range of on-the-job experiences and placements.
Additional professional development will be available through:
- Classroom-led and online training courses
- Mentoring opportunities
- Structured networking sessions
Throughout the programme, apprentices will receive one-to-one support from:
- Scheme Sponsor – A senior manager providing technical and professional guidance.
- Line Manager – Overseeing day-to-day development and progress.
- Buddy – A more experienced apprentice offering peer support.
