Transport for London’s (TfL) Tech & Data teams support the technology behind the millions of daily transactions across London’s transport network. This apprenticeship provides an opportunity to develop skills in supporting TfL’s Technology & Data teams, which play a crucial role in keeping London moving.
Apprentices will gain hands-on experience in a variety of technologies, including coding languages such as Python, C#, and ABAP, among others. The Technology Service Operations team uses these technologies to enhance customer journeys, optimise network efficiency, and extract insights from data to inform key business decisions.
What Will the Apprenticeship Involve?
The two-year development programme consists of eight placement rotations, providing comprehensive exposure to service management.
Each apprentice’s journey is unique, but a typical structure could include:
Placement 1 – Service Operations (12 Months)
- Knowledge Management – Creating and sharing knowledge for IT professionals and end-users.
- Change & Release Management – Managing changes to corporate IT infrastructure.
- Incident Management – Responding to unplanned service interruptions to restore operations.
- Monitoring & Event Management – Identifying and categorising monitoring requirements.
- Reporting – Using PowerBI tools to create and manage dashboards.
- Service Delivery Support – Ensuring adherence to Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
- Supplier & Contract Management – Building relationships to enhance service delivery.
Placement 2 – End User Computing (3 Months)
- Third-Line Citrix Support – Addressing complex technical issues.
- Identity Management – Managing Active Directory (AD) and security policies.
- Packaging & Build Management – Supporting application sequencing and migration to Windows 11.
Placement 3 – Transport Services (3 Months)
- Support Asset Management Systems, such as Maximo and Ellipse.
- Resolve incidents across London Underground (LU), Surface, and Rail for London Infrastructure (RFLI) Asset Management Applications.
- Gain firsthand experience within key transport control centres.
Placement 4 – Payments Service (3 Months)
- Station Assurance – Visiting TfL stations for payment system evaluations.
- Bus Operations – Observing bus garage activities.
- London Cycle Hire – Understanding TfL’s bike-sharing system.
- Customer & Staff Equipment – Learning about technologies used across the network.
Additional Placements (2-3 Months Each, Selected by the Apprentice)- Service Performance Management (SPM) Team – Supporting stakeholder engagement.
- Service Transition Support – Assisting new and updated service transitions.
- Agile Development Experience – Joining project development & sprint teams.
There is flexibility for apprentices to tailor placements to their interests while ensuring a solid foundation in Service Operations.
The first placement is recommended within Service Operations, as it provides an understanding of key Service Management areas.

Entry Requirements
To be eligible for this apprenticeship, applicants must:
- *Hold or be working towards at least 2 GCSEs (Grade A - C / Grade 4 and above)**, including Maths and English.
- Not already hold or be working towards a qualification at the same or higher level in a related subject.
- Be at least 18 years old before the scheme’s start date.

What Training & Support Will You Get?
Apprentices will be working towards a Level 3 qualification in IT Solutions Technician.
Throughout the scheme, apprentices will receive:

- Support from a dedicated scheme sponsor and line manager.
Additional Support Networks Include:
- Graduate & Apprentice Committee – A peer-support network for career development.
- Apprentice Alumni Group – Connecting apprentices to past graduates for insights and networking.

Assessment Process

- Applicants have one week to complete assessments.
- Assessment centres for apprenticeship roles will take place from February to April.
- Most roles have only one assessment day (dates cannot be rescheduled).
- Assessments may be conducted in person or virtually, depending on the role.
