When Planet Organic opened its doors in 1995, the dream was to offer the best and widest range of organic foods available, and her mission to promote health in the community and to bring a sense of discovery and adventure into food shopping. Fast forward to 2021 and they currently have 12 stores in London with over 300 employees.
The simple truth is that foods should be natural and wholesome. Planet Organic advocate that food be authentic and ethical, freshly prepared and tasty – not a mere convenience. They believe in ethical and sustainable farming and place great emphasis on the provenance of all of their products. . At Planet Organic you’ll find nutritious, seasonal and organic food with the goodness intact. You’ll find wide ranges of natural health foods suitable for all speciality diets, as well as a ground-breaking raw foods range.
Planet Organic hope that you find inspiration, excitement and good health from the food you eat and learn, like them, that to eat well is to live better.
When they opened in 1995, Planet Organic were the first shop to be certified by the Soil Association and they continue to work closely with them to certify that their fresh produce,Planet Organic brand products, all of the food cooked in the kitchens, their juices, smoothies and coffees made in store are organic and natural. The Soil Association also helped develop the training new starters complete when they join the business.
Sustainable Planet Organic became the first zero edible food waste business in 2018 by redistributing leftover food to the community through Olio and Too Good To Go. Any food waste that’s inedible is composted and used by regenerative agriculture farms around London.
In 2014, they launched their Unpackaged range of refillable organic essentials in Muswell Hill and now have Unpackaged stations in the majority of stores. In 2019, they opened a plastic free and refillable beauty installation in Muswell Hill to reduce and reuse toiletry packaging.
Packaging and waste is an area they continue to innovate in. All of their takeaway food containers, juice and coffee cups are compostable, and they have specific bins in store in which to dispose of these. In 2019, Planet Organic re-launched the range of store cupboard essentials in home compostable packaging and have unpackaged essentials in most of their stores. When listing new products, buyers press suppliers on packaging, always encouraging more sustainable options.
Their online orders are delivered across the UK in cardboard boxes made from 75% recycled fibres and padded out with recycled scrunched paper and compostable air pockets. Chilled products are kept cool with sustainable wool packaging.
