The Valuation Office Agency (VOA) is an executive agency of HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), providing the Government with the valuations and property advice required to support taxation and benefits.
To properly value sites that range from power stations to caravan parks, the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) uses over 230 bespoke applications. But with the organisation being over 100 years old, it has a legacy of an old tax system and technology.
They wanted to build technological capability to be able to deliver efficient end-to-end processes as well as a good customer experience.
At the VOA, the apprentices work alongside their peers on a variety of projects and are encouraged to share ideas and challenge themselves. With apprentices entering the organisation at different levels, the VOA provides a varied and testing range of tasks such as coding, second line support, front line application, problem-solving and development application.
"For us, apprentices are part of our ability to build capability in the organisation; with their perspective, drive and enthusiasm, we will be able to maximise the benefits of the digital world of our operations"
Philip MacphersonChief Digital and Information Officer | Valuation Office Agency
Two apprentices, Reece Bedding and Francis Dean, worked alongside senior members of staff on a project aimed at creating a model to collate data on rented properties across the UK. This was a three-part application that would prove to be invaluable in its capability to collate and analyse data.
Reece says:
"This was a difficult project for us apprentices, partly because of its complexity but also because we were working alongside senior people. However, working on a specific project was not only valuable in terms of the end result (a finished application) but also because it gave us a business insight into our technical and personal capability and we had responsibility to deliver something good and on time."
