GetMyFirstJob Ambassador
Hello, I Am Maddie
I decided to do an apprenticeship because I was eager to start working and make a living. A lot of my friends went to university, but I felt that this was not for me. I wanted independence and to start building my career.
Tell us more about your experience
Can you describe your job and what you do on a day-to-day basis?
Marsh is an insurance broker; we are the intermediary between big global clients and the insurers. My apprenticeship role was within Risk Management, which manages the biggest clients in the world and organises their insurance programmes. My day-to-day tasks included admin work, checking policy documents on behalf of clients, and liaising with the client advisers, brokers, and insurers.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
The feeling of being awarded my first pay rise, being rewarded for hard work and being appreciated for it.
What has been the biggest challenge of your career so far?
The biggest challenge is changing with technology and new systems. As you get used to a process it's not long until it then changes again.
What sort of support network do you have at your company?
The support from my company is incredible. I get help from old apprentices and graduates, my colleagues, managers and from my coach (training provider).
What will happen at the end of your apprenticeship and have you discussed this with your employer?
I have completed my apprenticeship and I therefore received my business admin level 3 qualification, and it freed up some time so that I could progress on with my role.
What would be your words of advice to someone thinking about doing an apprenticeship?
Research into all the different opportunities and companies. Look on different advertisement websites as they will not always be displayed in one place!
What has your journey looked like post-apprenticeship?
A steep learning curve in my new job role and accelerating personal progress. Making contacts and building relationships with colleagues in my team and the wider team for career path progression.
Have you done any additional qualifications since your apprenticeship ended?
I am underway with the Chartered Insurance Institute Certificate qualification. However, it is harder to complete outside of the apprenticeship as it is my own time I am dedicating to study rather than during the previous 20% allocated time.
What advice would you give to someone doing an apprenticeship in the same industry as you?
Manage time efficiently, stay on top of apprenticeship work despite your work load and complete any qualifications you can during that time. Get ahead of the game if possible! The sooner you finish your apprenticeship the sooner you get rewarded.
