Hello, I Am Shivam Damle
I wanted a career path that combined academic knowledge with hands-on experience, as I’ve always believed that learning and applying knowledge go hand in hand. Apprenticeships offered the perfect balance—allowing me to earn while I learn! The idea of continuous, practical learning alongside formal education really appealed to me.
Tell us more about your experience
My apprenticeship is with Parker Meggitt, where I’ve had the opportunity to work across multiple engineering disciplines.
Initially, I worked on design services tasks, including CAD work and learning the change control procedures essential to aerospace safety. Every design change in this industry requires detailed documentation and updates to manufacturing processes—precision is key to ensuring end-user safety.
More recently, I’ve become involved in metallurgical studies, conducting experiments on metal products by examining their crystalline microstructures. Teaching myself the effects of various processes on these structures has been a fascinating challenge—seeing how the micro-world influences the bigger picture is truly awe-inspiring.
Alongside my core role, I also participate in STEM outreach programs and other Business Resource Groups (BRGs) within the company, giving back to the community and expanding my knowledge.
What has been your most memorable experience?
The metallurgical work I’ve been doing has been incredibly memorable. Exploring everyday metals at a microscopic level revealed a whole new world—one that’s invisible to the naked eye but critical to how things function on a larger scale. It’s amazing how much goes on beneath the surface, and being able to observe and experiment with this has been a real highlight for me.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Coming from a hospitality background, adapting to a structured routine was a major challenge. I went from unpredictable shifts—starting anywhere from 10 AM to 7 PM and finishing as late as 3 AM—to a consistent 5:45 AM start every day to be at work by 8 AM. While it took time to adjust (and lots of coffee!), I’ve grown to appreciate the routine.
Balancing the demands of work and study is another ongoing challenge. Apprenticeships require managing expectations and staying on top of both commitments, which can be tricky when you’re eager to prove yourself.
How do Parker Meggitt support you?
The support network at Parker Meggitt has been incredible. My manager regularly checks in to ensure I’m comfortable with my workload and aligning my tasks with apprenticeship standards. The Early Careers representative and HR team also provide consistent support.
The lecturers at college are highly experienced and offer insights beyond their core teaching areas, while my colleagues and classmates naturally form a strong support system—we’re all in this together.
What does your future look like?
My apprenticeship includes an HNC, with the option to progress to an HND and potentially a BEng degree. With a BEng, I could become a registered Incorporated Engineer, officially recognising the skills and knowledge I’ve gained.
Depending on where I perform best, I’ll likely be offered a role in one of Parker Meggitt’s engineering departments.
What advice would you give to those considering the apprentice pathway?
My advice for future apprentices would be to take your time—there’s no rush. The time you spend deciding on your path is crucial.
- Identify what drives you. What do you genuinely enjoy?
- Explore your options. Attend career fairs—you might discover industries you never considered.
- Do your research. Learn about the companies and sectors that interest you.
- Think long-term. A proactive approach makes dealing with life’s curveballs much easier.
- Balance your life. Dedicate time to your personal development outside of work, too.
An apprenticeship isn’t just about gaining qualifications—it’s about shaping a fulfilling career and life.
