My day-to-day tasks are never the same, and I get to constantly learn new skills and work on different projects!
Tell us more about your experience
As a degree apprentice at BT Tower, I can rotate around different teams within the Technology department every 6 months. This means that my day-to-day tasks are never the same, and I get to constantly learn new skills and work on different projects! My current rotation is within the Transformation team in Service Platforms. This team works across many areas, looking at how to transform BT as a company, from a business point of view as well as for employees. As apprentices, we also get the opportunity to take part in apprentice-related events, such as career fairs or volunteering.
I'm very grateful to have had the opportunity to work on a range of projects. However, one of the most exciting projects I recently worked on was the broadcast delivery of Cricket Australia. I had the responsibility of managing communications to all relevant international broadcasters, as well as managing individual customer bookings and billing for this.
“It was really rewarding to see the direct impact of my work for such a huge international event!”
My proudest moment at BT would definitely be how they handled the uncertainty and change surrounding the pandemic over the last 18 months. They have offered continued support and assistance to employees, both physically in terms of working from home set-ups, as well as providing multiple resources of mental support for those who may need it.
I chose to do an apprenticeship as I always knew that I wanted to throw myself straight into a career, however, I also felt that it was important for me to continue with some type of education. An apprenticeship offers the best of both worlds – allowing you to earn while you learn. It's an amazing opportunity to be able to gain real hands-on experience whilst also studying towards a full degree.
“If you’re thinking of also completing an apprenticeship, make sure you do your research!”
There are so many amazing apprenticeship opportunities available, but it can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming not knowing where to start. I'd definitely say to look into both the companies and roles you're thinking of applying for to make sure it's suited to you. LinkedIn is great for this as you can actually talk to current apprentices doing similar roles and understand their experiences. Also, GetMyFirstJob is excellent for finding apprenticeship opportunities and as a place to find out more information about the process!
The support received from BT is amazing, both from previous apprentices and the different teams that we get to work with on a day-to-day. Everyone is always more than happy to offer their time and support with work-related projects or university assignments! In my apprenticeship I’ve picked up so many skills; confidence and communication are two of the biggest I’ve learnt. The level of responsibility we're given as apprentices really helps with building confidence in the work you're doing, as well as learning how to work well with the rest of the team!
At the end of my apprenticeship, I’ll roll off the scheme as a full-time employee at BT, having finished my degree. If you’re thinking of completing an apprenticeship, don’t confine yourself to one specific route or job role. I had no previous experience working in or studying a technology subject, and I’m now doing a tech-based apprenticeship that I love! Keep your options open and explore every opportunity before making a final decision!
