Ultimately, I am a doer. I feel when I am in an environment learning things firsthand then I learn more and perform at my best. Sitting down in a classroom just wasn't for me, however, I still wanted to get a degree. The degree apprenticeship gave me the best of both worlds. Compared to if I had of just gone to Uni full time, I am much better off. The skills I have learned in the workplace are fundamental to a professional career.
I haven't got a specific job role. Essentially, I am doing a bit of everything. My apprenticeship has been designed so the module we do at university is the same area of work I do in my everyday job, for example, my first placement was in marketing when I did the marketing module at uni. So far, my jobs have been a mixture of analyzing large sets of data, going onto the shop floor to see the products firsthand and presenting presentations to colleagues. I currently work in the office 4 days a week and then have a university day working from home.
Even though I am new to the company and industry I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to go to France on a customer visit.
It was the best feeling to have the trust of my colleagues who hadn't known me for very long.
It was an experience I learned a lot from, building my network with others outside my organization at such a crucial point in my early career. I'm hoping to have more experiences like this!
Deciding what to do after my A-Levels was a huge challenge I had to overcome. For me, it was either an apprenticeship or university. My parents wanted the best for me and have never experienced apprenticeships, so they always encouraged me to go to university, so it took a lot of convincing for them to see the benefits of an apprenticeship.
Parker Meggitt has provided me with more support than I could ever imagine, from my matrix manager who oversees my placements, to my managers directly linked to my placement. The people I work with daily are all passionate about helping me succeed in my career, and are always there for my questions, no matter how silly they may be sometimes.
After my apprenticeship I am hoping to go into a full-time role in the company. However, this is a long way off!
Take as many opportunities as you can! You never know where a small project may take you.
