Job summary:

The Ministry of Defence are seeking a Cyber Apprentice. This is your chance to join the front line of the digital battlefield and make a real-life impact on the safety and security of the UK. From day one, you’ll be playing your part and doing important work that simply can’t be found anywhere else.  Over 2 years, you will develop both independently and as part of a hardworking team by learning while you work, completing formal training, and studying for your fully funded Level 4 Apprenticeship.

Would you like to be part of a team supporting the delivery of a range of cutting-edge intelligence applications and services to our armed forces? Defence Digital plays a vital role in helping to defend and protect our nation in the age of information warfare. As part of the Ministry of Defence, we put effective and innovative digital and information technology into the hands of over 200,000 users across the globe.

If you can see yourself contributing to the world of Defence digital and technology, the next chapter of your career may be with us!

Responsibilities:

While on the programme you’ll complete 1 or 2 placements. These could be in Defence Digital, with another team or organisation in the Ministry of Defence. As the talent of the future, you’ll be in high demand with our digital links across defence.

The rest of your time will be allocated to formal learning consisting of compulsory and chosen modules as well as self-study for your qualification.  Our core training package will cover all the basics and help you settle into working life by developing your presenting skills, increasing your emotional intelligence, and building your resilience. The list of core topics includes:

  • Resilience and Wellbeing

  • Emotional Intelligence

  • Assertiveness

  • Conduct high quality conversations

  • Presenting confidently

The Cyber Security Technologist standard has three distinct options. At the end of the 2-year apprenticeship you will be competent in either:

  • The Cyber Security Engineer is the most technology focused role in the occupation and will typically design, build, and test secure networks or security products or systems with a particular focus on the security aspects of the design.

  • The Cyber Risk Analyst Focuses on risk assessment, analysis and giving advice on risk mitigations. The roles may support formal security governance, regulatory & compliance (GRC).

  • The Cyber Defender & Responder is more operationally focused, configuring and operating secure systems to prevent security breaches or monitoring systems to detect and respond to security breaches.

Qualifications:

The entry requirements for this programme are as follows:

  • An A Level in ICT

  • Or an International Baccalaureate at Level 3 in ICT

  • Or a Level 3 Apprenticeship in a similar subject

  • Or a BTEC Extended Diploma in ICT (180 Credits)

Experience (if you are unable to meet the qualification requirements):

A minimum of 1 year’s work experience in a Technical Support role e.g., Help Desk. You should also be working at Level 2 in Maths and English.

Person specification:

Cyber Security Technologists all require an understanding of security concepts and technology and how to mitigate risks arising from threats.  As well as supporting your colleagues, you’ll have your own tasks and projects to take charge of and will be encouraged to speak up and challenge how we do things.

You don’t need to have spent time in the cadets or completed lots of internships. You don’t need to be from a particular background or think a certain way. The important thing is that you’re someone who considers every possibility, asks questions, and digs deeper.

We are looking for people who are curious, adaptable, ready to learn and able to:

  • Come up with ideas that improve what we do

  • Use their initiative
