Salary
£31,000, rising to £32,250 in the second year.

London/Hybrid
Hybrid working arrangements allow a balance of 50% of time split between the office and home over a 4-week period. These arrangements may evolve depending on business needs.

Entry Requirements
Candidates must be on track to achieve or already hold a minimum 2:2 in a bachelor’s degree accredited by RICS in Quantity Surveying or Commercial Management (or equivalent) or hold a minimum pass grade in a RICS-accredited Postgraduate Diploma in Quantity Surveying or Commercial Management.

Job Overview
TfL’s Commercial teams manage the budgets of its projects, ensuring they deliver value for money. Quantity surveyors play a pivotal role in London’s growth, contributing to the transformation of infrastructure. These professionals collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to develop solutions for challenges such as urbanisation and resource constraints.
Sustainability is a key focus at every stage of construction, from feasibility design to procurement and implementation.
Responsibilities
The two-year programme includes up to four placement rotations, providing a diverse range of skills and experiences.
Example Placements:
Road Improvements – Surface Directorate (6 months):
- Reviewing a feasibility report for converting a London road to a pedestrian-only route.
- Developing a cost plan and budget aligned with business priorities.
- Engaging with an engineer to assess the impact of removing a road from the London network.
Procurement Team – Commercial and Finance Directorate (6 months):
- Writing a procurement strategy for new Metropolitan Line signalling equipment.
- Conducting early market engagement to explore available technologies.
- Advertising procurement works.
Rolling Stock Replacement Programme (6 months):
- Reviewing and negotiating contract changes.
- Approving monthly applications.
- Cost reporting and forecasting.
- Managing project costs and witnessing project progress on-site.
Track Maintenance – Operations Directorate (6 months):
- Reviewing train requirements after technical inspection.
- Placing orders to repair sections of track.
- Processing payments for completed contractor repairs.
Career Progression
Graduates on this scheme are supported in gaining professional membership with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). TfL provides accredited training, in-house development, APC interview preparation, and mentoring. Monthly APC forums encourage knowledge-sharing and collaboration.
Training and Support
The programme offers extensive support through on-the-job training, mentoring, and structured networking with scheme alumni.
Support Includes:
- Placement Manager: Provides day-to-day management and developmental guidance.
- Scheme Sponsor: A senior manager offering technical and professional advice with line management responsibilities.
- Buddy: Typically a graduate or apprentice who offers guidance and a warm welcome to the organisation.
- Graduate and Apprentice Committee and Alumni Group: Organises events and provides wellbeing support.
