Fun Fact / What Makes TfL DifferentOn this scheme, you direct your own development. You will be responsible for arranging most of your six-month placements, enabling you to maximise your experience by working on projects and with teams that align with your interests.
Salary- £31,000, rising to £32,250 in the second year.
- Final salary of £36,000 in the third and final year of the scheme.
LocationLondon/Hybrid
- Up to 50% of your time can be spent working from home over a four-week period.
- Hybrid arrangements may vary based on business needs.

Entry Requirements- A minimum 2:1 MEng or MSc degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
- Candidates must meet the requirements for CEng registration with the Institution of Civil Engineers.
- Offers are contingent upon satisfactory medical results, which may include drug and alcohol screening, eye tests, and hearing tests.
Important Note: You may apply to only one graduate scheme per year. Additional applications will be withdrawn.
If your primary interest lies in the Environmental Engineering scheme, you can indicate your preferred institution (ICE, IET, or IMechE) during that application. You will then be automatically considered for places associated with your chosen institution.
Proposed Start Date: 8th September 2025.
What Will You Be Doing?The three-year programme consists of up to six placement rotations, offering varied experiences tailored to your interests and guided by your development team.
Your work will involve collaborating with TfL teams, customers, local government, suppliers, consultants, and contractors to deliver critical infrastructure projects and shape London’s transport network.
Example Placements:
- Piccadilly Line Upgrade – Civil infrastructure enhancements for the introduction of a modern air-cooled train fleet.
- Elephant & Castle Redevelopment – Interfacing with the shopping centre redevelopment and constructing a new London Underground station entrance.
- Infrastructure Protection – Ensuring external works by developers and contractors do not compromise TfL assets or operations.
- Asset Engineers – Managing and assessing track, drainage, geotechnical, tunnel, and structural assets, including repair, replacement, and construction assurance.
- Project Management and Sponsorship – Overseeing transport projects from inception to construction.
Additional Projects May Include:
- Extending the service life of underground structures and earthworks.
- Delivering step-free access schemes to improve accessibility.
- Designing low-carbon infrastructure for major projects like the Bank Station Capacity Upgrade.
- Reimagining road layouts and cycle superhighways with the Highways Engineering team.
Placements are self-directed, supported by a Sponsor, Mentor, Buddy, and Development Advisor.
SustainabilityTfL prioritises sustainability in its operations and construction practices, with civil engineers playing a critical role in developing and maintaining an environmentally sustainable transport network.
The programme includes sustainability training to encourage innovative, low-impact designs and maintenance solutions.
Where Can This Career Take Me?After completing the programme, you will be equipped for various roles across TfL’s engineering team.
Career Pathway:
- Within 5–8 years: Apply for Chartered Engineer status, leading to roles such as Senior Engineer, Project Engineer, or Construction Engineer.
- Beyond 8 years: Advance to Team Leader or Project Technical Lead, with responsibilities for strategic decision-making in design, strategy, and processes.

- On-the-Job Experience: Across diverse placements.
- One-to-One Guidance: From experienced mentors, including:
- Supervising Civil Engineer (Sponsor): Senior-level technical and professional advisor.
- Placement Manager: Oversees day-to-day management and placement-related development.
- Buddy: A current graduate who helps you settle in.
- Lead Scheme Sponsor: Senior manager guiding the scheme’s technical direction and training.
- Development Adviser: Provides career coaching and guidance for progression.

What Qualifications Will I Gain?Participants will build a professional portfolio for Chartership with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
- By the end of the scheme, 90% of the experience required for Chartership is expected to be signed off.
- Graduates should be ready to sit for their Chartership review within 2–4 years of completing the programme.
