Salary
  • £25,294 (pro rata).

Location

London/Hybrid

  • Up to 50% of your time can be spent working from home over a four-week period.
  • Hybrid working arrangements may change based on business needs.

One year.

Entry Requirements
  • You must be in your penultimate year of an ICE-accredited BEng or MEng in Civil Engineering (or a closely related subject).
  • On track to achieve a minimum 2:1.
  • Your future academic qualifications must meet the requirements for CEng registration with the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Important Note:
Offers are contingent upon satisfactory medical results, including drug and alcohol screening, eye tests, and hearing tests.

Proposed Start Date: 8th September 2025.

What Will You Be Doing?

During this one-year programme, you will complete two six-month placements, each tailored to equip you with the skills and experience needed for a successful career in engineering.

Key Experiences:

  • Collaborating with TfL teams, customers, local government, suppliers, consultants, and contractors to deliver critical infrastructure projects.
  • Supporting the reliable operation of one of the world’s leading transport networks and contributing to London’s future.

Example Placements Include:

  • Elephant & Castle Redevelopment: Supporting the design and construction of a new London Underground station entrance and assisting the construction engineering team on-site.
  • Infrastructure Protection: Working with external developers, designers, and contractors to safeguard TfL’s assets and operations.
  • Places for London: Providing engineering support to develop TfL’s commercial property portfolio, including constraints plans and feasibility studies.
  • Asset Engineering: Assessing and managing track, drainage, geotechnical, tunnel, and structural assets. Contributing to repairs, replacements, design, and construction assurance.

Sustainability

Sustainability is integral to TfL’s operations. Civil engineers play a pivotal role in designing and maintaining a sustainable transport network that meets current and future needs.

You will receive training to incorporate sustainability into design, construction, and maintenance practices, promoting environmentally conscious engineering solutions.

Fast-Track Opportunities:
Upon successful completion of the placement, you may be considered for a graduate position through TfL’s fast-track process.

Training and Support

TfL offers a range of support to enhance your professional development:

  • Placement Manager: Manages day-to-day tasks and placement-related growth.
  • Lead Scheme Sponsor: Senior manager providing technical guidance for the scheme.
  • Mentor (Sponsor): Senior engineer offering technical and professional advice, including line management support.
  • Buddy: A peer (typically a graduate or apprentice) to help you acclimate and feel welcome.
  • Development Adviser: Provides career coaching and guidance for progression.

What Qualifications Will I Gain?

You will build your professional portfolio toward Chartership with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

Expected Outcome:

  • By the end of the programme, 20% of the experience required for Chartership should be signed off.
