The skills I've learned and the connections I've made have given me a great foundation to progress in my career.”

Job overview
Transport for London and its predecessor organisations have been keeping London moving for over 160 years. Throughout its history, the application of innovative technologies has played a central role in keeping the network safe, secure, and reliable while meeting ever-increasing demand. The Technology & Data team delivers the critical Information Technology services to TfL’s colleagues and customers, enabling over 1.65 billion journeys each year within the capital. TfL plays a pivotal role in keeping London moving and working, safely and sustainably. Whether it’s delivering 5G connectivity on the Tube, providing customers with real-time journey planning information via the TfL Go app, or providing critical radio communications to over 9,000 buses, the Technology & Data team is essential to the service TfL provides.
As a Technology Analyst, the graduate will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working on a variety of innovative technology initiatives across TfL’s delivery lifecycle. This could include exposure to business analysis techniques, practical product management, strategic management, architecture, solution build, and testing. The graduate may also gain exposure to more specialist activities such as user experience design and systems integration. The scheme is tailored to individual needs and strengths, combining comprehensive experiences with specialist development based on personal aspirations.
Sustainability
Sustainability is intrinsic to TfL’s work ethos, and TfL ensures that it operates in a sustainable way to protect and regenerate the natural world.
What will the graduate be doing?
As a graduate, the two-year development programme will consist of up to four placement rotations. The aim is to equip the graduate with the range of skills and experience needed for a successful career.
Since every graduate’s journey is unique, each will have the opportunity to explore different areas. Here’s an example of what their journey could look like:
Placement 1 – Business Analysis Team (six months)
Understanding business motivations, eliciting and managing solution requirements, modelling business processes, conducting options analysis, and carrying out acceptance testing with users.
Placement 2 – Technology Strategy & Planning Team (six months)
Translating business strategy into technology strategy, identifying portfolio outcomes, managing risk, managing portfolio change, business planning, and business case assurance.
Year 2
The second year of the scheme provides the opportunity to tailor the experience and specialise in two technology domains. Previous graduates have secured placements within Cyber Security, Data & Analytics, Data Science, Technology Service Operations, and Technology Development teams.
Regardless of aspirations, TfL will work with the graduate to match passions and enthusiasm with opportunities within the Tech & Data department. The Technology Analyst scheme will help develop a broad foundation of skills, preparing the graduate for roles post-scheme.
Where can this career take the graduate?
Upon completion of the Technology Analyst scheme, graduates could become:
- Business Analyst
- Cyber Security Analyst
- Data Analyst
- Product Analyst
- Or an equivalent role in a wide range of Technology & Data functions
In five years, graduates could become:
- Senior Business Analyst
- Team Leader
- Business Architect
- Product Manager
- Senior Cyber Security Analyst
- Data Scientist
TfL is a large and diverse organisation, and the breadth of the Technology Analyst schemes means there are many opportunities for progression in ten years, both within the wider Tech & Data department or elsewhere in TfL.
What training and support will the graduate receive?
TfL’s award-winning teams will support ongoing development through a wide range of on-the-job practical experience and placements. Professional development will be supported through a combination of training, mentoring, and networking.
The graduate will also receive one-to-one guidance throughout the programme from:
- Placement manager: Responsible for day-to-day management and supporting development.
- Scheme sponsor: A senior manager who acts as a technical and professional adviser and has line manager responsibility.
- Buddy: Usually an apprentice or graduate who will offer support and ensure the graduate feels welcomed.
- Development adviser: Supports professional development, offering career coaching and progression advice.
What do we look for?
TfL’s core values are extremely important, and the ideal candidates will be:
- Caring about colleagues, customers, and work
- Open to new ideas and collaboration
- Adaptable to diverse needs and willing to innovate
Everything TfL does ensures that the city remains futureproof for millions of Londoners and visitors. Graduates are vital to this vision, so it’s crucial to find the best people to help make this happen. TfL is looking for individuals who:
- Are flexible when dealing with the unexpected
- Relish challenges
- Have an inquisitive mind
- Possess a genuine interest in technology and data to improve TfL’s business and customer service
As part of the team, the graduate will have responsibility and the opportunity to add value from day one. If they are excited about inspiring and influencing the next 160 years of London, thrive under pressure, and are up for a challenge, this is the career path for them.
