Job overview
Transport for London’s Professional Services teams focus on the employees at the heart of the business.
The world-leading transport modelling teams at TfL play a crucial role in the evidence-based decision-making processes. Graduates will have the opportunity to gain experience across the transport modelling and data teams, ranging from strategic London-wide topics to local area micro-simulation of individual person movements. They will learn about the data available at TfL, how it informs models and analytical tools, how to use these models and tools, the interactions between them, and how outputs are used by stakeholders across TfL and beyond. An interest in transport, combined with a degree in a numerate subject, will enable graduates to thrive in this role.
Sustainability
Sustainability is intrinsic to TfL’s work ethos, and the organisation ensures that it operates in a sustainable way to protect and regenerate the natural world. The models and data graduates will work with play a fundamental role in ensuring that decisions made are aligned with a sustainable future, for example, a shift towards public transport and active travel to reduce carbon and air pollutant emissions.
What will I be doing?
As a graduate, the 2-year development programme will be made up of up to 4 placements, including at least one in each of the 3 transport modelling and data analysis teams. The aim is to equip graduates with the range of skills and experience needed for a successful career.
While each graduate's journey will be unique, here’s an idea of what their career development could look like:
Placement 1 – Operational Modelling and Visualisation
Graduates will use one or more of TfL’s industry-leading highway network models, local area micro-simulation models, or junction models to support the design and implementation of signal timing strategies or the design, implementation, and operation of road enhancement schemes, such as new cycle routes, bus lanes, or junctions to access new large developments. They will prepare the models, informed by data, to ensure they are suitable for assessment, undertake the assessment, analyse the outputs, and use TfL’s visualisation capabilities to present complex modelling analysis in a manner suitable for stakeholders.
Placement 2 – Public Transport Service Planning
Graduates will undertake modelling and analysis to inform decisions about passenger benefits from changes to public transport services. They will use one or more of the team’s station/pedestrian, train service, or public transport network models. They will work with stakeholders to identify the appropriate scope of work and with technical experts to ensure the models are used accurately. These changes could include updates to bus or rail services to better meet passenger demand across London, plans to upgrade stations, or understanding the impact of temporary closures due to engineering works. Graduates will become familiar with the wealth of public transport data used to inform service changes to buses, the Underground, the Elizabeth line, the DLR, London Overground, and Trams.
Placement 3 – Strategic Analysis
Graduates will work with data and tools at a London-wide level, informing key questions around environmental challenges and how London may change in different future scenarios. They will work with TfL’s strategic transport modelling suite, MoTiON, or perhaps one of the emerging innovative forecasting tools, such as the agent-based model and land-use transport interaction model. There may also be opportunities to work with environmental models and/or the data TfL collects to monitor progress towards ambitious sustainability targets. Graduates will work on major challenges for London and beyond, such as air quality, carbon emissions, or how major schemes (e.g., High Speed 2) will impact London.
Graduates will be expected to complete each of the placements outlined above. There is scope to tailor each placement to their skills and interests due to the breadth of work in each team. Placements may become more specialised, for example, in data science, modelling, or analytics, depending on graduates’ evolving interests.
Where can this career take me?
Upon completing the scheme, graduates are expected to roll off into one of TfL’s modelling or analytical teams and be active participants in those communities. They will work in close liaison with project managers and sponsors, as well as fellow modellers and analysts, to understand the objectives of technical work and tailor the scope accordingly. Graduates will keep abreast of the latest travel trends to ensure they are represented in analysis.
As graduates gain more experience, they will be expected to lead larger areas of work and, eventually, manage small teams. TfL is a large organisation, offering many opportunities for career progression.
What training and support will you get?
TfL’s award-winning teams will support ongoing development through a wide range of on-the-job practical experience and placements.
Graduates will receive practical training with industry-leading experts, along with the opportunity for training in areas such as presentation skills and project management. Professional development will be supported through mentoring opportunities, structured networking with other graduates, alumni, and the external transport modelling and analysis community.
Graduates will also receive one-to-one guidance throughout the programme from:
- Placement manager: Responsible for day-to-day management and support with development
- Scheme sponsor: A senior manager who acts as a technical and professional adviser and has line management responsibility
- Buddy: Usually an apprentice or graduate who provides support and ensures a welcoming environment
- Development adviser: Supports professional development through career coaching and progression at TfL

- Adaptability to diverse needs and willingness to innovate
