Candidates on IET-accredited pure Mechanical Engineering degree programmes will only be considered for the Systems Engineering stream.
If a candidate’s university is included in the IET list of accredited degrees and their specific degree course is in the process of being accredited, TfL will consider the suitability of the qualification on a case-by-case basis. Candidates should provide details of their degree subject, modules undertaken in the final year, and final year project title. They should state, to the best of their knowledge, when the course is expected to receive accreditation.

Job overview
TfL’s engineers focus on the assets that form the foundation of London’s transport system. The emphasis of this scheme is on developing world-class electrical, systems, and technology engineers who aim to become the senior engineers, subject matter experts, and leaders of the future.
Interns’ work will include finding solutions to meaningful problems across multiple transport modes. They will collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams from across TfL and with customers, local government, and the supply chain to deliver city-defining programmes and cutting-edge technology. Some current works include:
- Piccadilly Line Upgrade – Transforming the existing signalling system and procuring a new fleet of modern trains
- Step-Free Access – Improving accessibility across the Tube and Overground networks by making more stations step-free
- Bus Electrification – Enabling greener, cleaner travel by upgrading existing buses to zero tailpipe emissions
London never stops, and TfL faces the engineering challenge of modernising and upgrading its systems. The network plays a massive role in being a strong, green heartbeat for London, and engineers help shape the decisions that will lead to this objective.
Interns will support the reliable operation of one of the world's leading transport networks and shape London’s future transport systems.
Sustainability
Sustainability is intrinsic to the way TfL operates, ensuring that the organisation protects and regenerates the environment. Much of the work directly contributes to the decarbonisation and public health of London.
What will interns be doing?
The one-year IET-accredited development programme will consist of three placements lasting 3-4 months each, and interns will receive all the training and support needed to succeed in their role.
The aim is to equip interns with the range of skills and experience needed for a successful engineering career. TfL will also support their route to gaining Chartered Engineer status with the IET and their selection of a permanent role within the TfL Engineering Directorate.
Every career is unique, so every journey through the scheme is tailored to the individual.
Interns will have the freedom to choose the placements they work on within an overall framework, guided by their scheme Sponsor, Mentor, Buddy, and Development Advisor. Examples of placements include:
- Systems Performance and Integration – Simulating train performance for new trains
- Environment & Sustainability Engineering – Developing technical strategies for Net Zero projects
- Lifts and Escalators Engineering – Implementing technology updates and reviewing designs for accessibility
- Depot Operational Engineering – Investigating performance issues and implementing modifications
- Business & Digital Engineering – Developing Power Apps and Power BI dashboards to improve asset performance
- Major Projects – Working on large construction projects such as network extensions and line upgrades
- Building Services Engineering – Designing local upgrades, including step-free access schemes and bus station upgrades
The emphasis of TfL’s placement and graduate schemes is on developing world-class engineers who will become future leaders.
To help identify a first placement, interns are asked to express a preference for one of the following streams upon application:
Electrical Engineering
Placements could include designing electric drive upgrades for trains, developing charging infrastructure for electric buses, delivering transformational signalling upgrades, or designing power network upgrades for renewable energy connections.
Systems Engineering
Placements will include Systems Engineering and Systems Integration, defining architectures, managing opportunities for collaboration, and ensuring quality design across transport projects.
Technology Engineering
Placements could include working on road or rail signalling systems, designing infrastructure for autonomous vehicles, and delivering operational solutions using augmented reality or artificial intelligence.
Where can this career take interns?
TfL engineers have the opportunity to make a huge impact. A career with TfL will be varied and exciting, offering opportunities across Engineering.
During the one-year programme, interns will gain meaningful and valuable work experience to support their journey toward becoming fully qualified Chartered Engineers. At the end of the placement, they may have the opportunity to be considered for a graduate position through TfL’s fast-track process.
What training and support will interns receive?
During the programme, interns will receive on-the-job training through strategic, engineering, and operational placements, alongside access to online training courses. Interns will be supported by a scheme sponsor and a professional mentor – both Chartered Engineers – as well as buddies with similar backgrounds and interests.
