£31,000, rising to £32,250 in the second year.

London/Hybrid

• Must hold or be on track to achieve a minimum 2:2 BEng/BSc or MEng/MSc.
• Preferably in Fire Engineering/Fire Safety Engineering.
• Other Engineering disciplines (e.g., Structural or Mechanical Engineering) with fire-specific modules or similar fire-related subjects approved for CEng status by a body registered with the Engineering Council (e.g., IFE/IEI/CIBSE) or EU equivalent.

Our engineers focus on the assets that form the foundation of our transport system. London never stops, and our engineering challenge is likened to performing open-heart surgery on a patient while they are running a marathon!

As a TfL Fire Engineer, you will work across multiple transport modes, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, local governments, customers, suppliers, and contractors to deliver city-defining programmes. Projects may include creating fire strategy reports, inspecting systems, completing fire risk assessments, or reviewing designs for parts of the TfL network, such as the DLR, Victoria Line, or commercial properties.

TfL integrates sustainability into all its work, protecting and regenerating the natural world. As a Fire Engineer, you’ll contribute by incorporating new systems and materials to meet TfL’s sustainability targets.

Your two-year programme will include up to eight placement rotations designed to equip you with diverse skills and experience. Projects vary but could include:

• Designing within multidisciplinary teams: Fire, mechanical, electrical, comms, and system design, including fire interfaces.
• On-site experience: Collaborate with construction teams to understand emergency management, fire systems installation, and interfacing systems.
• Business operations: Gain insights into network management and emergency procedures across the TfL network.

• Bank Station Capacity Upgrade: Building a new platform and station box under the City of London.
• Crossrail: Europe’s most complex railway infrastructure project – fire strategy and assurance.
• Silvertown Tunnel: Designing active and passive fire protection systems.
• Electric Bus Fire Risk Analysis.
• Victoria Coach Station: Upgrading fire safety systems.

1. Asset Operations (3 months):

   • Learn about fire protection systems and their interactions (detection, suppression, compartmentation).
   • Participate in site inspections with the London Fire Brigade.

2. Fire Precautions and Compliance (3 months):

   • Understand fire safety measures for various structures using fire plans.

3. Places for London (1.5–3 months):

   • Review and produce technical documents, such as Fire Strategy Reports and Fire Risk Assessments.

Beyond these, graduates can choose additional placements to shape their career.

Upon completing the programme, you’ll join a TfL fire engineering team, further developing your career and working towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Within five years, you could:

• Lead engineering projects of national importance.
• Undertake senior roles in multi-disciplinary teams.
