- The role is based in London.
- Hybrid working: Typically, you’ll work from home no more than 50% of the time. Some placements and courses will require full-time attendance.
- Flexible working: All employees can request flexible working arrangements, and requests will be reasonably considered. Hybrid working arrangements may evolve based on business requirements.

Entry Requirements- Degree: Be in the penultimate year of an MEng or MSc in Mechanical Engineering (or an equivalent subject).
- Grade: On track to receive a minimum of 2:2.
- Accreditation: Your degree must be accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).
- Medical Assessment: Offers are subject to a satisfactory medical review.

Job OverviewOur Engineers focus on the assets forming the foundation of our transport system. This scheme develops world-class mechanical engineers to become senior engineers, subject matter experts, and future leaders.
You’ll work on solutions to meaningful challenges across multiple transport modes, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, customers, local governments, and the supply chain to deliver transformative programmes and cutting-edge technology.
Current Projects- Piccadilly Line Upgrade: Transforming the signalling system and introducing a modern train fleet.
- Step-Free Access: Making more stations accessible on the Tube and Overground networks.
- Bus Electrification: Upgrading buses to zero tailpipe emissions for greener, cleaner travel.
- New Station Construction: Enhancing capacity on the London Overground network.
SustainabilitySustainability is core to TfL’s ethos. You’ll contribute to transforming the world’s most recognisable transport network, helping achieve our goal of creating a greener, healthier, and more prosperous city.
What Will I Be Doing?Your one-year development programme includes three to four rotations across the business. These are tailored to your interests and career aspirations.
Example Rotations:
Rolling Stock Enhancements (3 months):
- Work on major train upgrades, including 3D CAD design, testing, and implementing solutions on vehicles.
Track Engineering (3 months):
- Trial new technologies to catch faults early.
- Carry out risk simulations, inspections, and review new layouts.
- Participate in track maintenance, often conducted at night.
Lifts and Escalators Engineering (3 months):
- Learn safety standards, implement technology updates, and review designs for improved accessibility.
Depot Operational Engineering (3 months):
- Apply root-cause analysis, conduct maintenance inspections, and implement upgrades at train maintenance depots.

During this internship, you’ll gain valuable experience that supports your journey to Chartered Engineer status. At the end of the programme, you may have the opportunity to secure a graduate position through our fast-track process.

You’ll also receive one-to-one guidance from:
- Placement Manager: Oversees daily tasks and supports your development.

- Chartered IMechE Mentor: Provides coaching and guidance towards Chartership.
