Civil Engineering Summer Placement
Salary: £25,294 pro rata
Location: London/Hybrid
Duration: 12 weeks
Start Date: 14th June 2025
Up to 50% of time can be spent working from home over a 4-week period. Hybrid working arrangements may alter subject to business requirements.

Entry Requirements:
Participants need to have completed at least one year of study and be on track to receive a minimum of 2:1 in an ICE-accredited BEng or MEng in Civil Engineering or a closely related subject.
The future academic qualification must meet the requirements for CEng registration with the Institution of Civil Engineers.

What will participants do?
The aim is to give a sample of the type of work that civil engineers get involved with at Transport for London. TfL understands that everyone’s career and ambitions are different, so every engineer’s journey is unique.
Participants will be working within one of TfL’s Engineering teams such as Infrastructure Protection Highway Structures, Railway Structures, Geotechnical, Tunnels, or Pumps & Drainage teams. Introduction sessions can also be arranged to meet engineers from a variety of different teams.
Where can this career take participants?
During this placement, participants will gain meaningful and valuable work experience, supporting their ongoing career journey towards becoming a fully-fledged Chartered or Incorporated civil engineer. At the end of the placement, there may be an opportunity to be considered for a graduate position through TfL’s fast-track process.
Training and Support:
TfL’s award-winning teams will support ongoing development through a combination of training, mentoring, and networking.
Participants will also receive one-to-one guidance throughout the programme from:
- Placement Manager: Responsible for day-to-day management and support with development
- Lead Scheme Sponsor: A Senior Manager who sets the technical direction for the scheme and guides the development and training of those on the scheme
- Development Adviser: Supports professional development through career coaching and career progression at TfL

If candidates already hold their qualification certificates, they should upload copies to their application. If due to sit final exams or needing to replace any certificates, these can be provided at a later stage.
