Job Overview
This is an opportunity to make a real difference and help shape the future of one of the world's most iconic cities. Transport for London (TfL) is at the heart of the Capital's transport network, and its CAD engineers play a vital role in designing its future. The organisation is seeking the next generation of creative thinkers and problem solvers to join its CAD Apprenticeship Scheme. This programme offers a chance to be part of a team that transforms London’s transport network, improves millions of journeys every day, and builds a greener, more connected city.
As a CAD (Computer-Aided Design) Apprentice, successful candidates will have the unique opportunity to work with and learn from some of the world’s leading engineers. By joining TfL’s diverse engineering community, apprentices will develop skills, gain hands-on experience on major infrastructure projects, and receive support towards professional qualifications.
TfL’s CAD engineers contribute to some of the most complex and innovative projects in the UK. One day, an apprentice might be involved in designing new trains for the Piccadilly Line Upgrade, and the next, they could be drafting plans for a new road link on the Silvertown Tunnel project. These projects span all transport modes, from the London Underground to Buses, DLR, and Highways & Streets. Whether upgrading existing infrastructure or exploring emerging technologies, this apprenticeship provides a first step into an incredible career, offering opportunities for growth, learning, and long-term impact.
Sustainability
Sustainability is intrinsic to TfL’s work ethos, ensuring operations are carried out in a sustainable way to protect and regenerate the natural world.
Role Responsibilities
CAD Apprentices will join TfL Central Engineering’s Business & Digital Team, gaining hands-on experience with both the London Underground and Surface Transport CAD Teams.
Key responsibilities include:

- Working closely with engineers and project teams to bring design concepts to life
- Contributing to major projects such as the Piccadilly Line Upgrade, Bakerloo Line Extension, or Cycle Superhighway
- Solving complex engineering problems and implementing innovative solutions
As part of a multidisciplinary team, apprentices will complete several placements throughout the scheme, gaining experience in:
- Surveying
- GIS (Geographic Information Systems)
- Innovations
- Civil Engineering
- Traffic Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
(Subject to availability of placements during the apprenticeship.)
Each apprentice's journey will be unique, with the flexibility to specialise in an area of interest within TfL. The organisation supports individual career aspirations by providing opportunities to develop expertise in specific fields.
Career Progression
This apprenticeship leads to an NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Engineering Design, equipping apprentices with essential industry skills. Through a blend of on-the-job learning with experienced CAD modellers and engineers, they will gain extensive industry experience.
Additional training includes:
- CAD software such as Bentley MicroStation, OpenBuildings Designer, AutoCAD, and Revit
- 2D & 3D Modelling
- Production of Engineering Drawings
- Building Information Modelling (BIM)
Upon completing the scheme, apprentices will be well-equipped for advanced roles within the engineering and design sectors. Many progress into positions such as CAD Technicians, contributing to major infrastructure projects that shape London’s future. The practical knowledge and professional network gained will also open doors to further qualifications and specialisations, enhancing expertise and career prospects.
