TfL’s Engineers focus on maintaining and improving the critical assets that form the foundation of the London Underground transport system.
The role of a London Underground engineering apprentice is essential in ensuring the ongoing performance and safety of the tube network. With technological advancements transforming trains and infrastructure, TfL continues to adapt maintenance practices to ensure assets operate at peak performance. Apprentices will be at the forefront of these developments while also overseeing legacy assets across the network.

What Will You Be Doing?
As a Rail Engineering Workshop (REW) Apprentice, individuals will follow a 3.5-year development programme, gaining experience across specialised engineering sections and departments. The apprenticeship will be based in Acton, West London, covering:
- Electrical Engineering
- Electronic Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Train Modification Unit
The aim is to provide apprentices with a broad range of skills and experience to prepare them for successful careers. TfL recognises that each apprentice's journey is unique, and the programme is structured to allow for tailored development.
Programme Overview
Year 1:
- Block release training at college in Enfield, focusing on fundamental engineering principles
- Targeted safety training courses
- Initial placements around the workshops to familiarise apprentices with the working environment
Year 2:
- A combination of block release at college and workshop placements
- Continued technical training
Years 3 & 4:
- Placement plan designed and managed by the Apprenticeship Development Manager
- Maximum exposure to key skills and knowledge areas at Acton Workshops
Where Can This Career Take You?
Upon successful completion, apprentices may transition into roles such as:
- Electrical / Mechanical Fitter
- Team Leader
- Production Manager
- Operational Manager
Many members of TfL’s REW senior management team began their careers through this very apprenticeship, progressing to executive-level positions. Apprentices will also have access to additional training opportunities, ranging from:
- Soft skills training
- Technical skills training
Entry Requirements
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Hold or be working towards *a minimum of two GCSEs (A-C / Grade 4 and above)**, including Maths (or equivalent)
- Applicants with an English Language GCSE at Grade D or Grade 3 will be eligible but must achieve a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification in English Language by the end of the apprenticeship
- Be 18 years old by 8th September 2025
- Not already hold or be undertaking the same Apprenticeship Standard elsewhere
Applicants will be required to provide original certificates and/or predicted grades as proof during eligibility checks.
Medical Requirements
Successful candidates will be required to pass a satisfactory medical assessment, which may include:
- Drugs and alcohol screening
- Hearing test
- Eyesight test, including Ishihara Plates and Colour Assessment & Diagnosis tests
Training & Support
Qualifications Gained
Apprentices will work towards a:
- Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering - Technical Support Technician
Training will take place at CONEL College in Enfield, with block placements to complete mandatory units. Additional units will be delivered by an assigned assessor.
Additional Support
Throughout the scheme, apprentices will receive:
- On-the-job training and placements
- Classroom-led and online training courses
- Mentoring opportunities
- Structured networking events
- One-to-one support from a Scheme Sponsor and Line Manager
- A buddy system with a more experienced apprentice

- Assessments must be completed within one week – re-issues are not possible
- Assessment centres for apprenticeship roles will take place from February to April
