TfL’s Engineers focus on maintaining and improving the critical assets that form the foundation of the London Underground transport system.
The role of a TfL Engineering Apprentice is essential in ensuring the ongoing performance and safety of the transport network. With technological advancements improving signalling and infrastructure, TfL continues to adapt maintenance practices to ensure assets operate at peak performance. Apprentices will be at the forefront of these developments, while also maintaining legacy assets across the network.
This is a customer-focused role, involving independent work while being part of a team. Apprentices will be expected to make technical decisions regarding Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) inspections on TfL assets, including rolling stock, lifts, and escalators.
With advancements in technology, this role offers an exciting opportunity to work on one of the world’s oldest transport networks, while implementing the most advanced testing technology.
What Will You Be Doing?
The 3.5-year development programme will consist of business rotations, providing apprentices with a broad range of skills and experience. TfL recognises that each apprentice’s journey is unique, and the programme is structured to allow for tailored development.
Programme Overview
Year 1
- Introduction to Transport for London and Engineering Fundamentals
- Learning fundamental engineering principles
- Health & Safety training
- On-the-job training within the NDT department at Technical Services in Acton Town
- Monthly online training sessions and mentoring
- Attending a formal training & examination course at Lavender International to achieve NDT Level 2 certification in the first of two basic methods
Years 2 & 3
- Continued online training sessions and mentoring
- Learning from experienced NDT Engineers
- Shadowing teams and building confidence and practical knowledge
- Studying the theory and fundamentals of the second basic NDT method, followed by a formal training & examination course
- Progressing towards NDT Level 2 certification in at least one complex method
- Taster placements in Fleet, Trams, Structures, Lifts, and Escalators
Year 3
- Formal training & examination course at Lavender International for NDT Level 2 certification in at least one complex method
- Support with teaching, learning, and skills development
- Project selection and preparation for passing the End Point Assessment

Entry Requirements
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Hold or be working towards a minimum of five GCSEs (A-C / Grade 4 or above)* (or equivalent), including Maths and English Language
- Be 18 years old by March 2026
- Not already hold or be undertaking a qualification at the same or higher level in a related subject or have already studied content from this qualification
Applicants will be required to provide original certificates and/or predicted grades as proof during eligibility checks.
Medical Requirements
Successful candidates will be required to pass a satisfactory medical assessment, which may include:
- Drugs and alcohol screening
- Hearing test
- Eyesight test, including Ishihara Plates and Colour Assessment & Diagnosis tests
Where Can This Career Take You?
Upon successful completion, apprentices may transition into roles such as:
- NDT Engineer
- Senior Engineering roles
Additionally, apprentices will be encouraged and supported to become a member of the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT).
There will also be opportunities to complete additional training courses, including:
- Soft skills training
- Technical skills training
- Safety training
Training & Support
Qualifications Gained
Apprentices will work towards a:
- Level 3 qualification in Non-Destructive Testing Engineering
- PCN Level 2 Magnetic Particle Testing
- PCN Level 2 Penetrant Testing
- PCN Level 2 Eddy Current Testing
- PCN Level 1 Ultrasonic Axle Testing
Training will take place at a formal training centre, with a combination of theoretical and practical examination.
Additional Support
Throughout the scheme, apprentices will receive:
- On-the-job training and placements
- Classroom-led and online training courses
- Mentoring opportunities
- Structured networking events
- One-to-one support from a Scheme Sponsor and Line Manager
- A buddy system with a more experienced apprentice

- Assessment centres for apprenticeship roles will take place from February to April
