Job Overview
The Project Controls team at Transport for London (TfL) is responsible for monitoring and systematically analysing progress and performance data on a variety of projects and new initiatives. This function plays a key role in ensuring efficiency, delivering value for money, and supporting the success of major infrastructure and operational projects.
Apprentices in this scheme will develop expertise in project controls, including estimating, planning, scheduling, and cost engineering.
What Will You Be Doing?
This two-year development programme consists of four to five placement rotations across TfL, providing exposure to capital investment projects, asset maintenance, and operations. By the end of the programme, apprentices will have developed a strong foundation in project controls and gained transferable skills applicable to a rewarding career in project management.
Example Placement Rotations:
- Deep Tube Upgrade Programme (6 months)
Developing expertise in estimating costs for project elements to ensure budget compliance
- Four Lines Modernisation (6 months)
Monitoring and analysing progress and performance data to keep projects on track
- Project & Programme Directorate (6 months)
Creating insightful reports to support project decision-making and assisting with change requests
- Major Stations (6 months)
Collaborating with planners to develop robust and accurate schedules
- Asset Performance Directorate (6 months)
Supporting risk management efforts, identifying project risks and opportunities
Apprentices will rotate across diverse business areas, including London Underground, Surface Transport, buses, Crossrail, and pedestrian and riverboat services.

Entry Requirements
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Hold or be working towards a minimum of two GCSEs (Grade 4/C and above) (or equivalent) in Maths and English Language
- Be 16 years old before the start date
- Not already hold or be undertaking a qualification at the same or higher level in a related subject or have already studied content from this qualification
Applicants will be required to provide original certificates and/or predicted grades as proof during eligibility checks.
Medical Requirements
Successful candidates will be required to pass a satisfactory medical assessment, which may include:
- Drugs and alcohol screening
- Hearing test
- Eyesight test
Where Can This Career Take You?
Upon successful completion, apprentices may transition into various Project Controls roles, including:
- Project Controls Assistant
- Assistant Planner
- Assistant Risk Manager
- Data Controller
These roles can then lead to senior positions, such as:
- Planner / Senior Planner
- Risk Manager
- Project Controls Manager
Apprentices will have access to further professional development, ensuring long-term career progression within TfL and the wider project management industry.
Training & Support
Qualifications Gained
- Level 3 Diploma in Project Control
Training Structure
- One study day per week
- College sessions approximately once a month for the first 15-18 months
- On-the-job training through diverse placements and real-world projects
Additional Support
Throughout the scheme, apprentices will receive:
- One-to-one support from their scheme sponsor and Line Manager
- Mentoring and guidance from a buddy (an experienced apprentice from the scheme)
- Support from a development adviser who provides career coaching and progression guidance

- Assessment centres for apprenticeships will take place from March to June 2024
