Transport for London (TfL) is seeking apprentices to join its Land Surveying team, working across London’s transport infrastructure to support design, engineering, construction, and asset management.
Land Surveyors play a vital role in capturing accurate spatial data using cutting-edge technology, including drones, 3D laser scanners, satellite and inertial navigation systems. These rapidly evolving tools enable innovative ways of surveying assets, ensuring projects remain on track, safe, and efficient.

Entry Requirements
Applicants should already hold or be working towards:
- *A minimum of 2 GCSEs (Grade A-C / Grade 4 and above)**, including Maths and English Language.
- A minimum of 2 A-Levels (Grade A-C or equivalent)* in any subject.
Please note: Applicants are not eligible if they currently hold or are working towards a qualification at the same or higher level in a related subject.
All applicants will be required to provide original certificates and/or predicted grades as proof for eligibility checks.
Age Requirement: Applicants must be 18 years old by September 2025 to be eligible.
Medical Assessment: Successful applicants will be required to undertake a medical assessment, which may include but is not limited to:
- Drugs and alcohol screening
- Eye test
- Hearing test
This role requires apprentices to be physically able to work in environments such as trackside locations and construction sites, which may include:
- Working at height
- Walking on uneven ground
- Exposure to all weather conditions
- Regular night shifts and occasional weekend work to access TfL infrastructure outside operational hours
Entry criteria are correct at the time of publishing but may be subject to change due to apprenticeship training provision retendering.
What Will the Apprenticeship Involve?
This is a five-year programme consisting of placements within both the Land Surveying team and wider Engineering teams. The aim is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the role of land surveying within TfL’s transport infrastructure projects.
Each apprentice’s journey will be unique, but examples of work experience include:
- 3D laser scanning of stations and buildings.
- Track measuring devices for track alignment and kinematic laser scanning.
- Topographic surveys for highway improvements and track renewals.
- 2D and 3D CAD drafting and modelling from point cloud data.
- Survey control networks using Total Stations, Digital Levels, and GNSS receivers.
- Tunnel gauging surveys for the introduction of new rolling stock.
- Virtual reality site tours using 3D models and 360-degree photography.
- Processing survey data, including control network adjustments, coordinate reductions, and point cloud registrations.
- Aerial and drone photogrammetry surveys.
- Setting out and engineering support for construction projects.
- Deformation monitoring of earthworks, buildings, and structures.
Where Can This Career Lead?
Upon successful completion, apprentices will roll off into a Land Surveyor (Band 2 Engineer) role within TfL’s Land Surveying team.
From there, opportunities will include:
- Survey data collection, CAD drafting, and 3D modelling for TfL’s engineering teams.
- Developing expertise in advanced surveying techniques such as drone mapping and track geometry analysis.
- Progression to senior surveying positions, supporting high-profile transport projects across London.
Apprentices will also have the opportunity to apply for professional membership with the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (CICES).
What Qualifications Will Be Gained?
- BSc (Hons) in Surveying and Mapping Science, accredited by CICES.
- Apprentices will receive full support to work towards Technical Membership of CICES, with the potential to progress to full membership upon gaining experience.
Training & Support
Apprentices will receive comprehensive support throughout the programme, including:
- Technical development through on-the-job experience and placements.
- Professional development via a combination of classroom-led training courses, online learning, mentoring, and structured networking opportunities.
- One day per week at university, alongside on-site practical training.
One-to-One Guidance Will Be Provided By:
- Placement Manager – Responsible for day-to-day management and development support.
- Scheme Sponsor – A senior manager who acts as a technical and professional adviser.
- Buddy System – Support from a current apprentice or graduate.
- Development Adviser – Providing career coaching and professional development guidance.

- Assessment Centres:
Scheduled from April to June.
Most roles have only one assessment day (dates cannot be rescheduled).
