Transport for London (TfL) is offering an Asset Operations Apprenticeship, providing an opportunity to gain firsthand experience in managing and maintaining TfL’s roads, bus, and river assets.
The Asset Operations Team plays a vital role in keeping London moving. This department is responsible for:
- Tunnels and traffic signals
- Environmental management, including tree planting
- Facilities for bus drivers
- River piers and bridges
- General road and highway maintenance
Apprentices will gain experience across various disciplines, engaging with stakeholders, contractors, and engineering teams to maintain and improve London’s transport infrastructure.
This is an exciting three-year apprenticeship for individuals who want to make London safer, more inclusive, and sustainable.
What Will the Apprenticeship Involve?
Apprentices will undertake various placements over the course of the programme, depending on availability.
Possible Placements Include:
Tunnels, Pumps, and Piers
- Supporting engineers with maintenance and minor upgrades.
- Working with lighting, ventilation, CCTV, fire detection, and storm water pump systems.
- Managing real-time alarms and tunnel control systems (e.g., HORUS, SCADA, Aquaview).
- Delivering CCTV replacements, pump station upgrades, and dredging projects on the River Thames.
Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Operations
- Ensuring traffic technology operates efficiently, including:
6,400 traffic signals
850 CCTV cameras
70 over-height vehicle detectors
150 variable message signs
- Responding to real-time incidents from the Network Management Control Centre.
- Challenging contractors to ensure effective work delivery.
Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) – Delivery Management
- Supporting asset renewal programmes for:
Traffic signals
Safety cameras
Over-height vehicle detection systems
- Assisting with budget management and project coordination.
Structures Management & Continued Safe Operations
- Supporting the maintenance of 1,800 highway structures and 235 premises.
- Managing structural inspections and safety procedures.
- Working with engineering teams to ensure ongoing public safety.
Highways Maintenance
- Supporting the operation and maintenance of London’s roads.
- Conducting site inspections and ensuring safety compliance.
- Using Maximo asset management systems to instruct and monitor work.
- Managing wildflower verges and tree planting initiatives.
Premises (Bus Stations, Stands, Victoria Coach Station, Woolwich Ferry, and Dial-a-Ride)
- Overseeing safe, reliable, and cost-effective maintenance of 230 premises across London.
- Supporting facilities management, safety compliance, and life-cycle asset renewals.
- Gaining experience with facilities management systems and operational procedures.

Entry RequirementsApplicants should already hold or be working towards:
- A minimum of 2 GCSEs (Grade A-C / Grade 4 and above), including Maths and English*.
Additional Requirements:
- Applicants are not eligible if they currently hold or are working towards a qualification at the same or higher level in a related subject.
- Applicants must be 18 years old by September 2025 to be eligible.
- Original certificates and/or predicted grades will be required for eligibility checks.
Medical Requirements
Successful applicants will be required to pass a satisfactory medical assessment, which may include but is not limited to:
- Drugs and alcohol screening.
- Eye test.
- Hearing test.
Training & Support
Apprentices will receive comprehensive support, including:
- On-the-job practical experience through multiple placements.
- Technical development via classroom-led training, online learning, mentoring, and networking opportunities.
One-to-One Guidance Will Be Provided By:
- Placement Manager – Responsible for day-to-day support and management.
- Scheme Sponsor – A senior manager who provides technical and professional guidance.
- Buddy System – Support from a current apprentice or graduate.
- Development Adviser – Providing career coaching and professional development support.

- Assessment Centres:
Scheduled from April to June.
Most roles have only one assessment day (dates cannot be rescheduled).
