We are looking to appoint an Apprentice Keyworker who will be trained to become a qualified Early Years practitioner at level 2 or 3. You will be required to work in both our 2-3 room and our preschool room with some sessions in the Parents stay and play sessions and creche, where we look after children from 0-4. You will gain experience in planning for individual and groups of children to ensure we are meeting the education and care needs of all our children.

Key responsibilities of the role and the day-to-day tasks and duties of the role:

Detailed below are the principal tasks and activities associated with your role. Activities and tasks are carried out on a daily, weekly or as required basis. Pre-School management will be responsible for working with you to establish, maintain and monitor that the activities and tasks are being performed to the Pre-School standards and on-going to assist you in your own personal development.

Your role will be as set out in this job description but please note that the manager reserves the right to update your job description, from time to time, to reflect changes in, or to, your job. You will be consulted about any proposed changes. The list of duties in the job description should not be regarded as exclusive or exhaustive.

Your role will be appraised on a regular basis during which your performance will be reviewed and assessed in accordance with personal and Pre-School aims and objectives. Please ensure you are very familiar with the checklist below as this details the key activities and responsibilities by which the Pre-School will gauge your performance. If you are in any doubt about the role or would like to obtain further guidance, mentoring or training then the Pre-School is only too happy to assist.

• Provide high quality care and activities for the children and to recognise both individual and group requirements in a secure, safe and stimulating environment.

• Ensure you are familiar with the key policies and procedures, especially safeguarding children, equal opportunities, behaviour management and health and safety . You will be provided with a copy of the Pre-School’s guide to policies and procedures via email, a staff handbook is available in the staff room.

• Work in partnership with early years professionals, for example Health Visitors and SEN services.

• Within reason to comply with requests to work outside normal hours, for example to cover if staff unexpectedly have to leave the room or are called away.

• Ensure parent issues and concerns are dealt with promptly and accurately. Ensure management are informed and consulted where relevant.

• Participate in staff meetings.

• Undertake other duties appropriate to the grade and character of the work as may reasonably be required by the Pre-School

• Never leave the room and put your colleagues at risk of being out of ratio – unless in case of emergency.

Attend training and development courses as directed by your Manager or Assessor.

• To promote at all times good relations between staff members, parents and children, and promote the quality ethos of the Pre-School.

Deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage framework and any other appropriate guidance for young children in accordance with Pre-School policy and guidelines.

• Observe each child’s progress and report on achievements, looking for progression and continuity alongside the Early Years Foundation Stage .

• Ensure that no child is ever left on their own in the room / outdoor area /whilst on an outing. Please note that the children’s toilets, Nappy changing areas and the kitchen are technically ‘in the room’.

• Understand and participate in the key person system. To ensure that your own key children profiles are up to date and maintained at the required quality level.

• Ensure that you attend to the all-round daily needs of the children by enhancing their physical, intellectual, social and emotional development.

• Support the children in serving their own food, milk, drinks and snacks and encourage good nutrition and sociable eating.

• Assist children with personal care, including changing nappies, assisting with toileting and other associated welfare duties.

• Carry out health and safety checks as required to ensure the room / Pre-School is tidy, safe, clean and secure for children, staff, parents/carers and visitors

• Participate in free flow systems. This aids children’s development in self-assurance, independence, making choices and self-selecting.

• Acknowledge children’s birthdays. Unless otherwise advised by parents/carers or Management.

• Ensure children have adequate access to the outdoor area and outside trips.

• Follow the kitchen duties and procedures.

• Cover for other staff as appropriate and as directed by your manager, especially given that unforeseen situations can occur when caring for children and recognising that the child’s welfare is paramount.

Please note: The position is working term time only plus extra training outside of working hours to meet the requirements of the apprenticeship.

Level 2 a minimum of English and maths grades A*-D (9-3) (or equivalent) are desirable OR willingness to complete Functional Skills Level 1/2 which are a requirement to have or to achieve before EPA Gateway.

Level 3 a minimum of English and maths grades A*- C (9-4) (or equivalent) are desirable OR willingness to complete Functional Skills Level 2 are a requirement to have or to achieve before EPA Gateway.

STANDARD & LEVEL

The successful candidate will work towards completing the Level 2 Early Years Practitioner Standard from the Institute for Apprenticeships & Technical Education. Delivered by Blackpool and The Fylde College offering expert tuition and exceptional facilities.

Your B&FC apprenticeship is made up of several different elements and each one reflects your individual abilities and career goals. Our expert tutors and assessors have relevant industry experience and will support you to achieve all your goals.

Off-the-job training

Developing your skills at work is called on-the-job training, 20% of your apprenticeship (equal to one full day a week) will be ‘off-the-job’. This might include attending College, tackling projects, online learning, coaching, shadowing, or training for your job.

Stacks of support

Assessment mostly takes place in the workplace. When you start, you will be allocated a skills coach, who will visit you at least once a month to guide and support you and help you to plan for your future. We will also provide you with specialist support for your English and maths and for any additional needs that you make us aware of.

  • Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn new skills are essential for this role.
  • We are also looking for someone who is able to show they have a caring and empathetic nature when working with children.
  • We also look for people who can demonstrate they are able to use their initiative and prioritise tasks effectively.

For the right candidates we are looking for someone to join our team beyond their apprenticeship as long as we are able to maintain an operating capacity of 85%

Candidates will be able to progress to level 4/5 foundation degree and then to a level 6 BA hons degree in Early Child development. We have also had apprentices who have then moved into schools to progress their career to teaching.
  • Once you have successfully completed the program you will be submitted for your End Point Assessment. The EPA is an assessment of all the knowledge, skills, and behaviours you have learned throughout your apprenticeship; it confirms you are ready and competent in the career path you have chosen. These assessments have been designed and developed by employers in the industry to reflect the daily work of the business.
