Opportunity Details

This apprenticeship follows the Embedded Electronic Systems Design and Development Engineer (Degree) Standard and leads to roles involving the design, development, and fault-finding of electronic circuits, devices, and systems.


As an Electronic Design Apprentice at AWE, you will begin your initial training at AWE’s Skills Academy, producing several electronic projects to develop your skills and knowledge in basic electronic theory, components, circuit design, circuit construction, and reporting. You will then complete a series of 6-month placements across AWE, while also attending college part-time to complete your HND.


On successful completion of your HND, you will spend your final two years on further placements around the business, working towards your Apprenticeship End Point Assessment (degree phase).


Apprentices at AWE begin their journey at the Skills Academy, where they build several electronic projects to develop their understanding of:

  • Component recognition and characteristics
  • Circuit calculations and design
  • Semiconductor theory
  • Fault-finding techniques
  • Testing and measurement methods


This role will suit those who have:

Qualifications Required

  • A level in Maths and another STEM (Physics, ICT, Computing, Electronics) based subject or equivalent BTEC level 3 /HNC/HND/T level in relevant discipline
  • 5 GCSE’s at grade 4/C or above including Maths and English
  • Applicants must be aged 18 or over, as of 31st August 2026 due to security clearance requirements
  • You must be a British National to apply for a role with AWE

Other Information

Please note: annual leave cannot be taken between 1st September and 2nd October 2026 due to mandatory inductions that form part of the apprenticeship programme. Any leave after this period will be subject to training provider requirements and must be approved in advance.


These roles are governed by Health and Safety at Work Regulations and require all candidates to have an Occupational Health pre-employment medical held at AWE which follows the initial selection process. All candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role and be willing and able to work in designated areas.
