Opportunity Details

The Tech & Data teams at TfL focus on the technology behind London’s transport network. The accelerated software development scheme enables graduates to gain experience on familiar and innovative systems. The department is known for delivering high quality software using platforms and tools such as C#, React, Scrum, Azure Cloud, Web, Back-End, Test Driven Development and Continuous Integration.

The programme consists of initial training followed by two placement rotations. Initial training lasts one month, during which graduates are introduced to object-orientated C#, code testing, and cloud services. This training is led by current developers, including recent graduates.

Graduates are expected to complete a minimum of two placements:

Placement 1 – Full-stack Web Application (5 months):
Graduates work in a team under the guidance of an experienced developer to create a responsive React web application for London Underground staff. The team also creates a C# API running in Microsoft Azure to feed data to the web application. Graduates use pair programming within a Scrum team to deliver high quality, clean code with automated tests.

Placement 2 – Revenue Systems Developer (6 months):
Graduates use a microservices architecture with C# and Azure to deliver a scalable platform for calculating road usage charges. With guidance from Microsoft engineers and placement team developers, graduates learn to select appropriate technologies, extend their knowledge of testing, optimise performance, and monitor live systems.
The first placement is fixed; subsequent placements are mutually agreed to ensure broad experience. Graduates are encouraged to become TfL STEM Ambassadors and participate in outreach programmes for schools.
