Opportunity Details

Participants will undertake three four-month placements in different teams, gaining practical experience on live projects. The programme is designed to support the journey towards becoming a Chartered Engineer. Participants will work alongside specialist engineers across the full lifecycle of a wide variety of systems.
The scheme offers three streams, and applicants must express a preference for one:

Electrical Engineering: Focuses on electric drive upgrades, charging infrastructure for electric buses, signalling upgrades, and power network enhancements for renewable energy.

Systems Engineering: Involves integration and system-wide considerations across transport modes, including defining system architectures, managing collaboration opportunities, and ensuring quality design delivery.

Technology Engineering: Uses emerging technologies to solve complex problems, including autonomous vehicle infrastructure, augmented reality, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and mobile communications rollout.

Skills Required

Qualifications Required

  • Penultimate year of a BEng/BSc or MEng/MSc in electrical, electronic, systems, or mechatronic engineering
  • Degree must be accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)
  • Candidates on IET-accredited pure Mechanical Engineering programmes are eligible only for the Systems Engineering stream
  • Must have the right to work in the UK for the full duration of the scheme

  • On-the-job practical experience

  • One-to-one guidance from a placement manager, scheme sponsor, buddy, and development adviser

Prospects

Interns may be considered for graduate positions through TfL’s fast-track process upon successful completion of the programme.

Other Information

Application Limit: Only one application per year is allowed for TfL graduate schemes. Subsequent applications will be withdrawn.

Medical Requirement: Offers are subject to a satisfactory medical assessment.

Visa Sponsorship: This role is not eligible for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship.


Assessment Process:


  • Five stages including online assessments
  • Online assessments must be completed within one week; tests cannot be re-issued after the deadline
  • Assessment centres will take place from December to January
  • Most roles have only one assessment day; alternative dates cannot be guaranteed
  • Centres may be in-person or virtual depending on the role
