Opportunity Details
Interns are asked to express a preference for one of three streams:
Electrical Engineering: Covers all aspects of the electrical systems and equipment that keep London's transport system moving. Placements could include the design of electric drive upgrades for trains, developing charging infrastructure for London’s electric bus fleet, delivering signalling upgrades, or designing power network upgrades for renewable energy connections.
Systems Engineering: Involves working across all transport modes, focusing on integration and system considerations to ensure cost-effective, carbon-efficient, and timely delivery. Placements include Systems Engineering and Systems Integration on major schemes, working at all project phases to define system architectures, determine requirements, manage collaboration opportunities, and ensure quality design.
Technology Engineering: Involves using new and emerging technology to solve complex technical problems. Placements could include work on road or rail signalling and control systems, designing and testing infrastructure for autonomous and connected vehicles, delivering solutions using augmented reality or artificial intelligence, ensuring cybersecurity, and rolling out modern communication networks across the Underground.
Sustainability is intrinsic to TfL’s ethos, with much of the work directly contributing to the decarbonisation of London.
