• Technical engineering knowledge relevant to the chosen stream (systems, electrical, electronic, communication, control, mechanical, materials, civil, or structural engineering)

Candidates must already hold or be on track to achieve:

• A minimum of a 2:1 MEng/MSc in an engineering or closely related subject accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), or
• A minimum of a 2:2 MEng/MSc in an engineering or closely related subject accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) or the Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET).
• Candidates must have the right to work in the UK for the duration of the scheme. The role is not eligible for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship.

Graduates receive technical development through on-the-job experience, classroom and online training, mentoring, and networking with scheme alumni. Support is provided by a placement manager, scheme sponsor, chartership mentor, buddy, and development adviser.

Upon completion, graduates are expected to move into the Environment & Sustainability Engineering team or another engineering team at TfL. Within five years, they are likely to take on increasing responsibility, lead engineering delivery, and develop sustainability strategies, supporting applications for Chartered Engineer and Environmentalist status. Many graduates progress to engineering management roles on national projects or lead discipline engineering teams.

The application process consists of five steps, including online assessments and assessment centres (in person or virtual). Candidates are advised to read the scheme information thoroughly to familiarise themselves with the process. If candidates already hold qualification certificates, they should upload copies to their application. If final exams are pending or certificates need replacing, these must be provided later. Information and guidance are provided at each assessment stage. Candidates must pay close attention to emails and deadlines, noting that online assessments must be completed within one week and cannot be re-issued after the deadline. Assessment centres for graduates and intern roles take place from December to January, with most roles having only one assessment day and no guarantee of alternative dates.
