Opportunity Details
Programme Structure:
The graduate programme consists of placements lasting between three and six months across TfL and the Engineering & Asset Strategy Directorate. Graduates also undertake short placements in maintenance and operations teams to gain a greater appreciation of the end user. Each graduate’s journey is unique, with freedom to choose placements, guided by a scheme sponsor, chartership mentor, and development adviser. Placements outside Engineering can be arranged to gain appreciation of the full range of TfL activities, including Project Sponsorship, the Safety Health and Environment Office, and the Commissioner’s Office. External placements, such as with the Department for Transport and Contractors, are also possible.
To guide development towards becoming a Chartered Engineer, graduates are asked to express a preference for an Engineering institution on their application, following one of the development pathways:
IET: Focus on systems, electrical, electronic, communication, or control systems engineering. Placements may include systems engineering for major projects, delivery of charging infrastructure for electric buses, signalling strategy, and power network upgrades for renewable energy.
IMechE: Focus on mechanical engineering and materials. Placements may include investigating groundwater pumping rates, building decarbonisation, heating & cooling strategies, human factors design, and trials of low carbon construction materials.
ICE: Focus on civil and structural engineering. Placements may include developing Whole Life Carbon Management Plans, evaluating climate change risks, guiding design teams on integrated outputs, optimising structural design, developing environment management tools, and working with suppliers on low carbon concrete.
Regardless of alignment, all graduates undertake a range of challenging placements to gain an overview of environment and sustainability at TfL. The scheme is designed to develop multi-disciplinary engineers, with pathways aligned to IET, IMechE, or ICE, depending on the graduate’s preference and background.
