Opportunity Details
Sustainability is intrinsic to TfL’s ethos, ensuring operations protect and regenerate the natural world.
The one-year development programme consists of initial training followed by a minimum of two placement rotations. The aim is to equip participants with a range of skills and experience for a successful career. Every graduate’s journey is unique.
Programme structure:
Initial training – 1 month: Participants meet fellow graduates and apprentices, are introduced to the fundamentals of power apps, workflows, object-orientated C#, code testing, and cloud services. Training is led by current developers and Microsoft trainers.
Placement 1 – Power app development – 5 Months: Participants work in a team under the guidance of an experienced developer, developing bespoke power apps applications, refining/estimating user stories, testing functionality, and releasing applications. Exposure to Agile ways of working, Power Platform, Dataverse, Azure components (azure functions with C# .Net, service buses/queues), and CI/CD.
Placement 2 – Customer relationship management (CRM) – 6 Months: Participants work in a team under the guidance of an experienced developer on MS Dynamics 365 CRM, involved in environment setup, configurations, customisations, integrations, and deployments of CRM solutions. Azure DevOps is used for source control and deployment pipelines.
During the scheme, participants are encouraged to become TfL STEM Ambassadors and help with the schools’ outreach programme, delivering workshops to primary and secondary schools on coding & big data.
The first placement is fixed, and following placements are usually mutually agreed to ensure experience with a wide range of technologies, tools, and teams.

Skills Required
Skills in Power Apps, Power Automate, C#, Azure Cloud, Dataverse, SharePoint, HTML/CSS/JavaScript, MS Dynamics 365 CRM, Scrum, Agile ways of working, and cloud services.
Qualifications Required
A minimum of 2:2 in a computing related degree, including Computer Science, Computing, Computer Games Programming, Software Engineering, Web Development, Web Technologies.
Successful candidates must have the right to work in the UK for the duration of the scheme, as at the start date. This role is not eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa scheme.
Training
Award-winning teams support ongoing development through on-the-job practical experience and placements. Professional development is supported through training, mentoring, and networking. Participants receive one-to-one guidance throughout the programme from:
Placement manager: Responsible for day-to-day management and development support
Scheme sponsor: Senior manager acting as technical and professional adviser with line manager responsibility
Buddy: Usually an apprentice or graduate who provides support and ensures participants feel welcomed
Development adviser: Supports professional development through career coaching and progression at TfL

Prospects
Upon completing the scheme, participants are expected to move into a Junior Software Developer position, responsible for delivering software stories within a Scrum team, meeting business requirements, fully tested and meeting standards for code quality. Within five years, participants could be Lead Developers, accountable for a team’s software design and implementation, or Software Development Managers, accountable for delivery teams, strategic architecture decisions, and budgeting multi-million-pound projects.
Other Information
The application process consists of 5 steps, including online assessments which need to be completed within an allocated time frame. Candidates are highly recommended to read through the document thoroughly to familiarise themselves with the process.
If qualification certificates are already held, copies should be uploaded to the application. If final exams are due to be sat or certificates need to be replaced, these must be provided at a later stage.
Information and guidance around each assessment stage is provided as candidates progress through the application. Attention should be paid to emails and deadlines, noting there is 1 week to complete online assessments and tests cannot be re-issued once the deadline passes.
Assessment centres for graduates and intern roles will take place from December-January, and many roles only have 1 assessment day so alternative dates cannot be guaranteed. Assessment centres are conducted in person and virtually (role dependent).
