Opportunity Details

Participants focus on the assets that form the foundation of London’s transport system. The engineering challenge is likened to performing open heart surgery on a patient while they are running a marathon. The network is central to London’s Net Zero Carbon ambitions, and engineers help shape decisions that lead to carbon reduction.

The two-year development programme may consist of up to eight three-month placements, including short placements in maintenance and operations teams, such as at depots, with signalling maintainers, or with Network Controllers. Participants work in multidisciplinary teams across TfL, collaborating with customers, local government bodies, suppliers, and consultants.

Placements outside of engineering are also available, such as in Project Sponsorship, the Safety, Health and Environment Directorate, and the Commissioner’s Office. The scheme is designed to support the path to Chartered Engineer status with the Institution of Engineering and Technology.

A dedicated scheme sponsor, professional mentor, peer buddy, and development adviser provide tailored support, advice, and feedback throughout the programme.

Personal Qualities

TfL seeks candidates who are:

  • Caring about colleagues, customers, and work
  • Open to each other, new ideas, and working together
  • Adaptable to diverse needs and willing to innovate

Prospects

After completing the scheme, participants are expected to join one of TfL’s engineering or technology teams in a permanent role. Career development continues through a variety of assignments, with increasing responsibility and opportunities to lead engineering solutions and collaborate with stakeholders. Many alumni have progressed into senior engineering leadership and strategic roles within TfL.

Other Information

Benefits include free travel on the TfL network for the participant and a nominee, final salary pension scheme, discounted National Rail and Eurostar travel, 30 days annual leave (pro rata), private healthcare discounted scheme, tax-efficient cycle-to-work programme, and various retail, health, leisure, and travel offers.

The application process consists of five steps, including online assessments. Assessment centres take place from December to January, in person and virtually (role dependent).

TfL is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion, and guarantees an interview to any disabled candidate who meets all essential criteria.

Candidates are encouraged to upload qualification certificates to their application. If they are due to sit final exams or need to replace any certificates, these must be provided at a later stage.

Candidates will receive information and guidance around each assessment stage as they progress through the application. There is one week to complete online assessments and TfL cannot re-issue these tests once the deadline passes.
