Hello, I Am Ella

You shouldn’t feel put off by other people’s attitudes on not going to university – it’s a completely personal decision and you have to do what’s right for you!

Tell us more about your experience

I work in the Real Estate department in a team that deals with waste and energy. In my day-to-day role, I spend a lot of time studying land law, looking at land titles and the land register. I’ve only just started my apprenticeship, so I haven’t had the chance to work on any projects yet but I’m excited to get started!

I decided to do an apprenticeship as I thought the experience you gain from one is so valuable. The support I’ve been given by my colleagues is also so crucial in helping me develop - you can learn so much from other qualified solicitors and legal professionals on the job. If you’re considering doing an apprenticeship, I would say to research before you apply. Make sure that the firm or business is the right fit for you and your career aspirations. I used GetMyFirstJob when applying – their information helped hugely in the process.

“On the whole, apprenticeships are amazing and such a valuable experience.”

You shouldn’t feel put off by other people’s attitudes on not going to university – it’s a completely personal decision and you have to do what’s right for you. On the whole, apprenticeships are amazing and such a valuable experience. I had to overcome some adversity before my apprenticeship. I have a disability that made getting to school very difficult, so I really had to work hard to catch up with work between medical appointments.

I passed all my GCSEs and A-Levels and my hard work paid off – I managed to get an apprenticeship with a national firm! I’ve had a lot of support from my Ashfords colleagues. They’ve been really helpful in explaining the key concepts that involve my role and allow flexible working to suit my studies. They have a genuine interest in what I’m doing at college. My training provider has also had some amazing advice, they helped talk me through every step of the process and made sure I didn’t have any issues.

I’ve already picked up some great skills in my apprenticeship, one of the main ones being time management! My confidence and ability to work independently have also been boosted massively. Once I’ve completed my apprenticeship, I hope to go on to complete a solicitor apprenticeship and qualify for that role, but I have all this to discuss with my employer yet!
