They test the skills you'll need on the course like critical thinking, problem solving, data analysis, communication and scientific knowledge. Medical schools will also expect you to have some relevant paid or voluntary work experience. You'll usually need at least 5 GCSEs grades 9 to 7 (A* or A), including English maths and sciences and 3 A-Levels, or equivalent, including biology and chemistry.

You can apply for senior consultant roles, once you're on the General Medical Council Specialist Register. You may go on to lead a team, manage a department or become medical director for an NHS Trust. You could also move into teaching and training students, trainee doctors and other healthcare professionals.
Physician associates support doctors to diagnose and manage patients in hospitals and GP surgeries.
Cosmetic surgeons treat people who choose to alter their appearance. Plastic surgeons repair tissue damaged through illness or injury.
Midwives support pregnant women and their babies before, during and after, childbirth.
Patient transport service controllers arrange transport to take frail or vulnerable people to and from medical appointments.
Optometrists test vision, identify eye health problems, prescribe glasses and fit contact lenses.
Healthcare science assistants support healthcare professionals.

There’s only so much you can learn when you just do a qualification. As an apprentice, you’ll also get to learn on the job – whether that’s designing amazing graphics, chopping vegetables, or building engines!
