Merchant Navy engineering officers maintain the mechanical and electrical machinery and instruments on board a ship.
You can do a maritime mechanic Level 2 apprenticeship. You will cover both electrical and mechanical engineering work. You would take further training to qualify as an officer after completing your apprenticeship. You'll usually need some GCSEs, usually including English and maths.

With experience, you could work your way up to third, second and then senior engineer before taking on the role of chief engineer. You could also work towards chartered status with the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST). If you decide to work onshore you could move into management, ship surveying, lecturing or research.
Chief inspectors manage operational teams in their districts like CID or neighbourhood policing, co-ordinating responses to major incidents.
Specialist search and rescue workers help locate and rescue people from hazardous environments.
Divers work underwater at sea, or in rivers, lakes, canals and reservoirs.
Air accident investigators search for the causes of accidents and serious incidents, involving civilian aircraft.
Coastguards help prevent the loss of life along the coast and at sea by co-ordinating and supporting search and rescue operations.
Rail track maintenance workers inspect and repair railway tracks, bridges, tunnels and viaducts.

Your apprenticeship will last 36 months, and successful apprentices will achieve a Water Industry Treatment Process Technician, Level: 3 (wastewater pathway) standard, endorsed by the Institute for Apprenticeships.You will need to be mobile in this role, well contribute up to 500 towards driving lessons and tests to help to get you on the road!
