Security officers make sure that buildings, valuables and people are safe and secure.
You must have this before you can work legally in the private security industry in any job that is on the front-line. You'll need a Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence for agency and contractor jobs. Experience of working in the police or armed forces could help you get into this job.

With experience, you could become a supervisor, then senior or chief security officer. With further qualifications like a Level 3 Security first line manager, you could go into security management or training. You could set up your own security company.
Royal Navy ratings work in a variety of job roles on board ships or submarines at sea, or onshore at a naval base.
Royal Air Force (RAF) airmen and airwomen use specialist skills for support roles in defence and peacekeeping missions.
Security managers are responsible for protecting an organisation's buildings and keeping staff and visitors safe.
Coastguards help prevent the loss of life along the coast and at sea by co-ordinating and supporting search and rescue operations.
Fingerprint officers work to identify fingerprints taken from crime scenes.
Merchant Navy engineering officers maintain the mechanical and electrical machinery and instruments on board a ship.

There’s only so much you can learn when you just do a qualification. As an apprentice, you’ll also get to learn on the job – whether that’s designing amazing graphics, chopping vegetables, or building engines!
